How this instrument works

Mulch coverage is a volume problem hiding behind two different units. A landscape bed is measured in square feet across its surface, but the mulch layer you want is specified in inches of depth — a unit too shallow to matter on its own but, spread across a whole bed, adding up to real volume. Converting the depth to feet and multiplying by the area gives cubic feet, and dividing by 27 (since one cubic yard is 3 ft x 3 ft x 3 ft) converts that into the cubic yards that bulk suppliers actually sell and deliver.

Depth is not a cosmetic choice. Clemson Cooperative Extension's Home & Garden Information Center recommends roughly 2 to 4 inches of organic mulch depending on the material, deep enough to suppress weeds and hold soil moisture but shallow enough that it doesn't smother roots or starve them of oxygen — a mulch layer piled too deep against a trunk, sometimes called a mulch volcano, can trap moisture against the bark and invite rot. Worked example — a 500 sq ft bed at 3 inches deep

A landscape bed measures 500 square feet, and you want the standard 3-inch depth. Enter 500 into Area (sq ft) and 3 into Mulch depth (inches).
