How this instrument works
Every major scale, regardless of which note it starts on, is built from the identical sequence of whole and half steps: Whole, Whole, Half, Whole, Whole, Whole, Half. In semitones, that's 0, 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11 counted up from the root — the same seven offsets whether the root is C, G, or any of the other ten chromatic starting notes. That fixed pattern is what makes a scale 'major': change the pattern and you get a different scale type entirely.
This instrument is a practical reference for songwriting, improvisation, and ear training — knowing the seven notes available in a given major key tells you which notes are likely to sound 'in key' against a chord progression built from that scale. Scale notes are conventionally numbered 1 through 7 as scale degrees, from the tonic (the root, degree 1) up to the leading tone (degree 7, a half step below the octave). Worked example — the C major scale

C major is the reference scale every other of the 12 major scales is measured against, because it's the only one that uses no sharps or flats at all — every one of its 7 notes is a natural letter name, which is also why its key signature is 0.
