How this instrument works

A nautical mile isn't an arbitrary unit — it's built directly from the geometry of the Earth. One nautical mile is defined as the length of one minute of arc along a great circle (a line of longitude, for instance), which makes it the natural unit for navigation: read the difference in latitude between two points off a chart in minutes of arc, and you already have the distance between them in nautical miles, no separate conversion needed.

Because the Earth isn't a perfect sphere, different countries historically measured 'one minute of arc' slightly differently. That ended in 1929, when the International Hydrographic Conference in Monaco fixed a single international nautical mile at exactly 1.852 kilometers — the figure this calculator uses, chosen to represent the Earth's average curvature closely enough for real-world navigation while finally giving every chart-maker and navigator the same number to work from.

Statute miles — the ordinary 'miles' on a car's odometer — are a completely different unit with a different, older origin (Roman pacing, later fixed by English statute), and the two units don't convert with a round number: 1 nautical mile is about 1.15078 statute miles, since it corresponds to a slightly longer real-world distance. Mixing the two up matters more than it might seem — a flight plan or shipping distance filed in the wrong unit understates the true distance by about 15%.

Worked example — a 10 nmi leg of a sailing route

A sailor plans a coastal leg measured off the chart at 10 nautical miles. In kilometers, that's 10 × 1.852 = 18.52 km exactly — no rounding, since 1.852 km per nautical mile is an exact defined figure, not a measured approximation.

In statute (land) miles, the same 10 nmi works out to 10 × (1.852 ÷ 1.609344) ≈ 11.51 miles — noticeably more than 10, which is a useful gut-check: a nautical mile is always the longer of the two units, so a distance in nautical miles will always convert to a larger number of statute miles.

Why is a nautical mile a different length than a regular mile?

They come from entirely different origins.
