Unlike most drugs on this site, omega-3 supplementation research in dogs doesn't dose by simple body weight — it doses by metabolic body weight, written as body weight in kilograms raised to the 0.75 power, which better reflects how metabolic rate (and therefore appropriate dose) scales across very different dog sizes than a flat mg-per-kg figure would.

This is a comparatively well-studied dose for dogs — notably more so than the corresponding cat estimate elsewhere on this site.

Worked example — a 20 kg dog
A 20 kg dog: metabolic body weight is 20^0.75, about 9.46. Low end = 9.46 × 230 ≈ 2175.2 mg EPA+DHA per day; high end = 9.46 × 370 ≈ 3499.2 mg per day. Because of the 0.75 exponent, doubling a dog's actual weight does not double this dose — metabolic rate scales more slowly than body mass does.
A 10 kg dog computes to roughly 1293.4–2080.7 mg/day, not half of the 20 kg dog's range — it's noticeably more than half, which is exactly the point of using metabolic weight instead of simple weight. A 34 kg large dog computes to roughly 3238.4–5209.7 mg/day, again less than 34/20 times the 20 kg figures would suggest under simple linear scaling.
Questions
Why is this dose based on weight to the 0.75 power instead of a flat mg/kg figure?
Because metabolic rate — and with it, the biologically meaningful dose of many supplements and drugs — doesn't scale in direct proportion to body weight. A dog twice as heavy doesn't have twice the metabolic rate; raising weight to the 0.75 power approximates that relationship. Fritsch et al. 2010 and Bauer 2011 both dose omega-3 this way in dogs, which is why this tool follows the same convention rather than a simpler mg/kg formula.
How is this different from the fish oil dose for cats on this site?
The cat calculator uses a simpler, lower-confidence mg/kg estimate, because no peer-reviewed feline dose-titration study exists the way Fritsch et al. 2010 exists for dogs. This dog page rests on two peer-reviewed sources; treat the cat figure as a rougher, extrapolated estimate by comparison.
Can too much fish oil be harmful to a dog?
Yes — very high omega-3 intake has been associated with gastrointestinal upset, and, with prolonged high dosing, effects on blood clotting and vitamin E status. This tool provides a reference range based on published veterinary sources; it is not a substitute for professional veterinary advice, particularly if your dog is on blood thinners, has a bleeding disorder, or is scheduled for surgery.

Yes — this dose is specifically for EPA and DHA, the marine omega-3s found in fish oil. Plant sources like flaxseed provide ALA, a different omega-3 that dogs convert to EPA/DHA only inefficiently, so a flaxseed-based product will not deliver an equivalent dose at the same total weight. Check your specific product's EPA+DHA content, not just “omega-3” on the front label.
