Where this calculator differs from a single-day estimate is what it reports alongside that day — a fertile window spanning six days rather than one. Sperm can survive inside the reproductive tract for up to roughly five days awaiting an egg, and the egg itself remains viable for only about a day after release, so the days capable of leading to conception stretch well before ovulation and end shortly after it, not on ovulation day alone.

The arithmetic starts with the ovulation estimate — cycle length minus 14 — and then extends five days earlier for the window's start and one day later for its close. A 28-day cycle places ovulation on day 14 and opens the fertile window on day 9, closing it on day 15; a longer, 32-day cycle shifts the whole block later, to day 18 with a window from 13 to 19, while a shorter 24-day cycle pulls everything earlier, to day 10 with a window from 5 to 11. Worked example — 28-day cycle

Move to a 32-day cycle and every figure shifts later by the same 4 days: ovulation on day 18, window from day 13 to day 19. Questions

How is a 6-day fertile window different from just knowing the ovulation day?

Ovulation day alone marks when the egg is released, but conception doesn't require intercourse on that exact day. Sperm already present can survive up to about five days, so intercourse well before ovulation can still lead to conception once the egg appears; the egg itself is only viable for roughly a day afterward. Combining both survival windows produces a six-day span rather than a single date.

Does this assume the same thing as a due-date or conception-date calculator?

The ovulation estimate itself does — both rest on a standard 14-day luteal phase counted back from the next expected period. What differs is the output: a conception-date tool typically reports one day, while this one reports the fuller window around it, a more useful figure for planning rather than for reconstructing a single past date.

Why subtract 14 days specifically?

Why 5 days before ovulation and only 1 day after?

The asymmetry follows straight from biology: sperm can persist for days inside the reproductive tract awaiting an egg, but once released, the egg itself survives only roughly 24 hours. That's why the window leans heavily toward the days before ovulation and closes quickly afterward, rather than sitting evenly on either side of it.
