How this instrument works
This figure is the plain part-over-whole calculation, percentage = time spent ⁄ total time × 100, applied specifically to durations rather than a general quantity. It's the same underlying math as any percentage, but framed for the everyday question of how much of an available block has already gone by — whether that block is a workday, a project deadline, or a daily screen budget.
This number is useful precisely because raw durations alone don't communicate proportion well: 90 minutes spent means something very different depending on whether the total available was 120 minutes (75% used, most of the block gone) or 480 minutes (18.75% used, plenty remaining) — the percentage puts both situations in immediately comparable terms.
Tracking software, billing systems, and productivity dashboards all lean on exactly this calculation under the hood, converting logged minutes or hours against a stated total into the figure that actually gets displayed to a user checking their progress.

Worked example — 30 minutes of a 120-minute block
30 minutes have been spent out of a 120-minute block. The percentage used is 30 ⁄ 120 × 100 = 25% — a quarter of the available time, with three-quarters still remaining, a figure far easier to interpret at a glance than the raw '30 out of 120' pairing alone.
60 minutes spent out of a 60-minute block is exactly 100% — the full available time used, none left over. And 15 minutes out of a 60-minute hour reaches that identical 25% mark too, despite a much smaller absolute duration, since both examples represent a quarter of their own respective totals.
