How this instrument works

Playing media faster or slower is inverse proportionality in its simplest form: double the speed and the same content takes half as long, and playing at three-quarters speed stretches it out to four-thirds the original time. Dividing the original duration by the speed multiplier gives the new duration directly, with no need to convert units first as long as both duration and multiplier are entered consistently.

Podcast and video apps commonly offer speeds from around 0.5x up to 3x or more, with 1.25x to 1.75x being a popular range for listening to spoken-word content faster without the pitch-shifted, chipmunk effect that simple speed-up once caused. Modern players use time-stretching algorithms that preserve pitch while changing tempo, so speech stays intelligible even well above 1.5x.

This calculator works equally well in the other direction: slowing playback down below 1x is common for closely following a fast-talking lecturer, transcribing dialogue, or studying technique in a tutorial video frame by frame. A speed of 0.5x doubles the running time, giving twice as long to absorb the same content.
