How this instrument works
A quilt's finished size — the width and length it measures once it's sewn, pressed, and hanging on a bed — is always smaller than the fabric you have to cut to make it, because every seam eats a strip of fabric on both sides of the stitch line. This calculator adds a seam allowance to each side of the width and length, then multiplies the two enlarged dimensions together to return the total cutting area a finished quilt top actually requires.
Quilters standardly sew with a 1/4-inch seam allowance — narrower than the 5/8-inch standard in garment sewing, because quilt seams meet at far more intersections and a wide allowance would leave the back of a pieced top bulky with folded fabric. That convention is why the calculator defaults to 0.25 inches, though it accepts any allowance a pattern or personal habit calls for, added once per side, so it counts twice per dimension — once on each edge of the width, once on each edge of the length.

Worked example — a 60 in x 80 in queen quilt top
Enter 60 into Finished quilt width, inches, 80 into Finished quilt length, inches, and 0.25 into Seam allowance per side, inches — a standard queen-size quilt top sewn with the conventional quarter-inch seam allowance. Each dimension grows by twice the allowance: width becomes 60.5 in and length becomes 80.5 in.
Total fabric area needed, sq in multiplies those two enlarged dimensions: 60.5 x 80.5 = 4,870.25 square inches. That's the cutting area the pieced top itself requires — batting, backing, and binding are calculated separately and typically need extra margin beyond this figure.
Questions
Why is the fabric area larger than the finished quilt size?
Because every seam consumes fabric on both sides of the stitch line, so a piece cut to the exact finished size would come up short once it's sewn to its neighbors. Adding a seam allowance to each edge before cutting compensates for that loss, which is why this calculator's output is always somewhat larger than width times length at the quilt's finished dimensions.
Why does the calculator default to a quarter-inch seam allowance?
Because 1/4 inch is the standard seam allowance used throughout quilting, in contrast to the wider 5/8-inch allowance typical of garment sewing. How much extra fabric should I buy beyond this exact figure?
Most quilters buy a margin beyond the bare minimum to cover cutting errors, shrinkage from pre-washing, and pattern layout waste — commonly an extra 10 to 20 percent of yardage on top of the calculated area, more for directional prints or complex piecing that wastes fabric between cuts. Is the seam allowance different for hand quilting versus machine quilting?
The quarter-inch convention holds for both — seam allowance is a piecing decision, made while sewing the top together, and is largely independent of whether the quilting stitches that hold the layers together afterward are done by hand or machine. Some patterns do call for a scant quarter inch (a hair narrower) to compensate for the way pressing folds fabric, but that's a piecing-technique choice, not a hand-versus-machine one.
