How this instrument works
A second is an SI base unit, and since 1967, when the 13th General Conference on Weights and Measures voted on it, that unit has been pinned to atomic physics: 9,192,631,770 periods of radiation from a hyperfine transition in caesium-133. Earlier definitions leaned on astronomy — first one part in 86,400 of a mean solar day, later a fixed slice of tropical year 1900 — and both were dropped once clocks grew steady enough to catch Earth's rotation wobbling.
A minute has no physical definition of its own. It is 60 seconds, full stop, and BIPM lists it (with hour and day) among non-SI units accepted for use alongside SI rather than inside it. That 60 was inherited, never chosen: Babylonian astronomers counted in sixties, Greek astronomy borrowed their tables, and Ptolemy cut an hour into partes minutae primae and then cut those again into partes minutae secundae — first small parts, second small parts. Both units are named for how many times somebody divided by sixty.
Which unit a trade reaches for follows how long its events run. Seconds govern anything instrumented: shutter speeds, a 25-to-30-second espresso extraction, sprint splits, latency budgets, PCR hold steps. Minutes govern anything scheduled around people — parking bays, oven dials, appointment blocks, law firms billing in tenths of an hour. Athletics and broadcast straddle that seam, writing 3:57.4 for a mile yet quoting 2,700 seconds for a football half, which is precisely why this conversion keeps coming up.

Worked example — a 300-second darkroom step
Your film-development notes call for 300 s in a stop bath, but that battered mechanical timer clamped beside your enlarger is dialled in minutes only. Type 300 into Seconds (s), and Minutes (min) answers 5. Set your dial to five, agitate, and stop watching a stopwatch.
Underneath, arithmetic runs 300 × 0.0166666666667 = 5.00000000001, and that trailing digit is all it costs to write one sixtieth as a terminating decimal — roughly two parts per trillion. Nudge your entry to 305 s and you get 5.0833 min, which a clock reads as five minutes plus five seconds, since 0.0833 × 60 = 5. It does not mean five minutes plus eight.
Questions
Is a minute always exactly 60 seconds?
By definition, yes, and that is what this page applies. Civil clocks disagree once in a while: UTC absorbs Earth's uneven rotation through leap seconds, so an occasional minute has run 61 seconds. Twenty-seven such insertions have happened since 1972, most recently on 31 December 2016, each announced beforehand by IERS in Bulletin C. In 2022 delegates at CGPM resolved to stop inserting them by 2035, which will finally make every UTC minute 60 seconds long.
Why show 0.0166666666667 instead of writing 1/60?
Because one sixtieth has no terminating decimal — 0.01666… repeats without end, so any calculator storing a fixed number of digits must round it. This engine keeps twelve, giving a value that differs from true one sixtieth by about two parts per trillion. Feeding it every second in 15,000 years would shift your answer by roughly one second. For timing anything shorter than a geological era, treat it as exact.
What does 5.75 minutes mean on a clock?
Five minutes and 45 seconds, not five minutes and 75. Decimal minutes and clock minutes look alike and behave differently, which makes this the single most expensive mistake in timesheets, race splits and call logs. Convert by multiplying only the fractional part by 60: 0.75 × 60 = 45. Going the other way, seconds divided by 60 rejoin the whole minutes, so 5 min 45 s becomes 5 + 45/60 = 5.75.
Do imperial and US customary systems use different minutes?
No — time is the one quantity where those systems never split. Gallons, tons and fluid ounces all differ across the Atlantic, but a second is an SI base unit adopted everywhere, and a minute is 60 of them in Sheffield, Sacramento and Shanghai alike. No conversion factor, no footnote, no survey variant. Anyone who tells you an American minute differs is selling something.
How many seconds are in an hour, a day, or a week?
An hour holds 3,600 seconds, a day 86,400, and a week 604,800. Those figures assume nominal days: a leap-second day carries 86,401, and clock days that spring forward or fall back for daylight saving run 82,800 or 90,000. Astronomers also track a sidereal day of about 86,164.1 seconds, which is how long Earth takes to spin once relative to distant stars rather than relative to our Sun.
Why does my stopwatch reading not match this to the last digit?
Usually because your stopwatch already rounded before you read it. Handheld timers typically resolve to a hundredth of a second, and human reaction adds another tenth or two at each press — which is why sanctioned athletics results come from electronic starting blocks and beam timing.
