How this instrument works

US shoe sizing isn't derived from a formula the way metric measurements are — it's built around a physical measuring tool. The Brannock Device, invented by Charles F. Brannock in 1925 and still standing on the floor of most shoe stores today, established a de facto industry standard: US Men's size 9 corresponds to a measured foot length of exactly 10.25 inches, and each full size step above or below that anchor moves the foot length by one-third of an inch (a unit shoemakers historically called a 'barleycorn').

This calculator works from that same anchor and step size. Enter your foot length in inches and it computes how many one-third-inch steps you sit above or below the 10.25-inch/size-9 reference point, then reports the resulting US Men's size. There's no ANSI or ISO standards body behind any of this — Brannock's chart is a proprietary trade reference that the footwear industry adopted informally, not a government or standards-organization document, which is worth knowing before you treat a size as more precise than a foot really is.

The EU size shown alongside it uses a constant offset — US Men's size plus 33 — anchored at the common US9=EU42 reference point published across brand size charts. That's a deliberate simplification: a strict linear cm-based conversion formula drifts noticeably from real brand charts as you move away from the anchor, while the constant-offset approach matches published US8=EU41, US9=EU42, and US12=EU45 anchors closely across the core adult men's range, roughly US6 through US12. Outside that range, or for women's and children's shoes (which use entirely different numbering scales), treat the EU figure as an approximation rather than an exact conversion.

Worked example — a 9 15/16 in foot, one size below the anchor

A foot measuring 9.916666667 in (9 and 11/12 in, or 1/3 in shorter than the 10.25 in anchor) is exactly one full US size below the reference point. US size = 9 + (9.916666667 − 10.25) ÷ (1/3) = 9 + (−0.333333333 ÷ 0.333333333) = 9 − 1 = 8.0 exactly.

EU size follows directly: 8.0 + 33 = 41.0. That matches the commonly-published US8=EU41 anchor found across mainstream shoe brand charts (Nike and Converse among them), which is why this calculator uses the constant-offset convention rather than a literal cm-based linear formula — the linear approach predicts EU40.7 at this same foot length, a size below what real brand charts actually show.

Is US shoe sizing based on an official government or ISO standard?

No. US shoe sizing is a footwear-industry trade convention built around the Brannock Device, a measuring tool invented in 1925 that shoe stores adopted informally rather than through any ANSI, ISO, or government standards process. There's no single body that governs or audits shoe-size labeling the way there is for, say, screw threads — which is part of why fit still varies noticeably between brands even at the 'same' labeled size.

Why does my EU size on this calculator not match the tag inside my shoes?

Brand size charts vary — some run their own lasts (the foot-shaped mold a shoe is built on) slightly long or short relative to the Brannock/EU anchor points this calculator uses, and children's, women's, and athletic-specific lines often use different scales entirely. This calculator gives the standard men's US-to-EU brand-chart approximation, most reliable in the roughly US6-US12 range; treat it as a strong starting point, not a guaranteed match for every brand's tag.

Should I measure my foot standing up or sitting down?

Standing, with your full body weight on the foot being measured. Feet spread and lengthen slightly under load, so a seated measurement typically comes out shorter than your true weight-bearing foot length — which is exactly the scenario a properly fitted shoe needs to accommodate.

What does a 'barleycorn' have to do with shoe sizing?

A barleycorn is an old English unit equal to 1/3 of an inch, and it's the step size US and UK shoe sizing both still use today: each whole shoe size represents one barleycorn (1/3 in) of foot length. The unit dates back centuries before Brannock's measuring device, but the device formalized it into the modern US retail sizing anchor of size 9 = 10.25 in.

Does this calculator work for women's or kids' shoe sizes?

No — it's built specifically for US Men's sizing, the most commonly searched scale. Women's US sizing typically runs about 1.5 sizes higher than the equivalent men's size for the same foot length, and children's sizing uses its own separate numbering that restarts near size 13.5 (toddler) rather than continuing the adult scale, so plugging a foot length meant for those charts into this men's-anchored formula will give the wrong answer.
