Worked example — 160 lb and 200 lb
A 160 lb person aiming to maintain weight: 160 × 15 = 2400 kcal/day.

Why doesn't this ask for height, age, or sex?
Because it's deliberately a one-input shortcut. Leaving those out is exactly what makes it quick, but it also means the estimate can't tell apart a short, sedentary 50-year-old from a tall, very active 20-year-old at the same bodyweight — they get the identical number here even though their real calorie needs likely differ.
Does bodyweight alone account for muscle versus fat?
No. Like other weight-only estimates, this multiplier treats a pound of muscle the same as a pound of fat, even though muscle tissue burns more calories at rest. That means it can under- or overestimate needs for people with unusually high or low muscle mass relative to the average adult the heuristic assumes.
How big is the gap between the lose, maintain, and gain numbers?
Each step is 3 kcal per pound of bodyweight, so the gap scales with body size: at 160 lb, moving from Maintain to Lose drops the estimate by 480 kcal/day (160 × 3); at 200 lb, the same step drops it by 600 kcal/day. That's in the same ballpark as the commonly cited ≈500 kcal/day deficit used for roughly a pound of weekly weight loss, though it isn't calibrated to hit that figure exactly.
Is this safe to use for weight loss on its own?
It's meant as a rough starting point, not a personalized plan.
