How this instrument works

Sofa shopping has two separate constraints that are easy to check only one of: whether the sofa fits the room once it's in, and whether it can actually get through the doorway, hallway, or stairwell on the way there. A sofa that measures perfectly for the living room wall can still be an unmovable object if it's a few inches too wide for the narrowest doorway between the front door and its final spot.

This calculator checks both. For the doorway, it subtracts a 4-inch maneuvering clearance from your narrowest doorway or hallway width — movers need a little wiggle room to angle a sofa through a turn, not just a flat width match. For the room, it subtracts 24 inches of walking space from your available floor length, since a sofa pushed flush against every wall leaves no room to actually walk around it.

The result is matched against standard sofa sizes: a 2-seater is roughly 50 inches wide, a 3-seater about 78 inches, a 4-seater about 90 inches, and a 5-seater about 108 inches — common industry-standard width bands, though exact dimensions vary somewhat between manufacturers and styles. The calculator recommends the largest standard size that clears both the doorway and room-space constraints.

Questions

Why does the calculator subtract clearance instead of just comparing raw widths?

Because a sofa rarely travels in a straight line from delivery truck to living room — it usually has to turn a corner, angle through a doorway, or clear a stair landing, all of which need extra room beyond the sofa's flat width. The 4-inch doorway clearance and 24-inch room clearance build in that real-world maneuvering margin rather than assuming a perfectly flush fit.

Is doorway width or sofa depth usually the tighter constraint?

It depends on the specific sofa and doorway, but sofa depth (front to back) is very often the binding dimension for getting through a doorway, since most sofas are deeper than most doorways are narrow. This calculator checks doorway width as the constraint, but if your sofa's specific depth measurement is close to your doorway width, measure and compare that dimension directly before ordering.

What if my sofa needs to go up or around a staircase?
