How this instrument works

A square inch is the area enclosed by a square measuring one inch on each side; ft² scales that idea up to one foot. Because feet have been split into twelve parts since Roman surveyors used their uncia — that twelfth which gave English both "inch" and "ounce" — squaring this ratio yields 12 × 12 = 144. Merchants had their own word for such counts long before any standards body wrote it down: a gross.

That 144 owes nothing to measurement, so it cannot drift. It falls out of a definition, which is why every foot ever legislated obeys it: pre-1959 American, modern international, even that survey foot retired at the end of 2022. Each contains twelve of its own inches, hence 144 of its own in². What 1959's international yard and pound agreement fixed was instead metric equivalence — an inch of exactly 25.4 mm makes 1 in² exactly 645.16 mm², and 1 ft² exactly 0.09290304 m².

Which unit you meet depends on whether you are cutting material or planning a room. Gasket stock, sheet metal, printed circuit panels, leather offcuts and screen-printed transfers are quoted per in², where figures stay conveniently whole. Roofs, glazing schedules, tile orders and property listings from Ohio to Hong Kong to Mumbai run in ft². Structural steel keeps a foot in both camps: one #4 reinforcing bar offers 0.20 in² of cross-section, while whatever slab holds it is priced by ft².

Worked example — one floor tile

A 12-inch tile measures 12 × 12 = 144 in². Type 144 into Square inches (in2) and the Square feet (ft2) line returns 1.0 — one tile, one ft². That tidy result explains why 12-inch tile became a default size in American showrooms: a stacked box of them is a count you can read straight off a floor plan.

Scaling up brings no surprises. A 10 by 14 foot room covers 140 ft², so it swallows 140 tiles, or 20,160 in² of material before you allow for cuts and waste. Run it backwards as a check: 20,160 × 0.00694444444444 gives 140 again, with the trailing digits staying exactly where they belong.

Questions

Why divide by 144 rather than 12?

Because area grows with the square of a length. Twelve inches make a foot, so twelve rows of twelve small tiles fill one big one: 12 × 12 = 144. Dividing an area by 12 is this conversion's most frequent slip, and it inflates every answer twelvefold — a 1,000 in² panel turns into a fictitious 83 ft² instead of its true 6.94 ft². If a result looks implausibly large for material sitting in front of you, that missing factor of twelve is your first suspect.

Is the factor exact?

The ratio is exact; the decimal is not, quite. One ft² holds 144 in² by definition, so the honest multiplier is the fraction 1⁄144, whose decimal form 0.00694444… repeats forever. This page carries it to twelve significant figures, leaving a relative error near 6 × 10⁻¹³ — far below the resolution of any tape measure, laser meter or CNC table you might hand the answer to. Working by hand, just divide by 144 and keep the fraction; nothing is lost that way.

Do imperial and US customary units differ here?

No. Both inherited an identical foot from the 1959 international yard and pound agreement, under which the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa pinned the inch at 25.4 mm. Even before that treaty the ratio stood at 144 on both sides of the Atlantic, since each country defined its foot as twelve of its own inches. Only the metric equivalents shifted in 1959; the 144 never moved.

How does this relate to psi and psf?

Through the same 144, but flipped. Pounds per square inch and pounds per square foot describe one quantity spread over areas differing by that factor, so 1 psi = 144 psf and a 30 psi tyre reads 4,320 psf. Note the reversal: an area converts from in² to ft² by dividing, whereas a pressure converts from psi to psf by multiplying, because area sits in the denominator. What are these units worth in metric?

One in² is exactly 6.4516 cm², or 645.16 mm². One ft² is exactly 929.0304 cm², which is 0.09290304 m² — near enough a tenth of a square metre, a handy rule for eyeballing overseas property listings. All three figures terminate rather than trailing off, because each descends from an inch defined as exactly 25.4 mm, so you may quote them without a tilde or an approximation sign.

What do everyday objects measure?

A sheet of US letter paper is 8.5 × 11 = 93.5 in², or 0.649 ft²; A4 comes to about 96.7 in² and 0.671 ft². A credit card covers roughly 7.2 in². A 15.6-inch laptop display spans about 104 in². A 30 by 80 inch interior door is 2,400 in², which is 16.67 ft². Reference points like these catch order-of-magnitude errors faster than re-reading your arithmetic.
