How this instrument works
Outside the United States, floor area is almost universally described in square metres rather than square feet — the square metre is the SI derived unit of area, defined as the area of a square with sides exactly one metre long, and it is what appears on architectural drawings, building codes, and property listings across Europe, Australia, most of Asia and beyond. For a rectangular room, that area comes from the same basic relationship as in any unit system: length multiplied by width.
This instrument takes a room's length and width, both in metres, since that's how metric floor plans, laser measures and tape measures marked in metres are read, and multiplies them directly to return the area in square metres. No conversion factor sits inside the math — length times width is length times width regardless of which unit the tape measure happens to be marked in.
This is especially useful when material is specified per square metre, as tile, laminate flooring and carpet often are in metric countries, or when comparing a floor plan drawn in metres against a supplier's per-square-metre pricing. For an irregular room, split it into separate rectangles, calculate each one's area here, and add the results together.

Worked example — a 5 m by 4 m room
Enter 5 into Length (m) and 4 into Width (m) — a modest bedroom by international sizing conventions. Area (sq m) reads 20.00, simply 5 multiplied by 4, with nothing left to round since both measurements are whole numbers.
That 20 sq m figure is what a tile or laminate quote priced per square metre, or a property listing's stated floor area, would both be measured against for this exact room.
Questions
Why do most countries use square metres instead of square feet?
Because the metre is the base unit of length in the International System of Units (SI), which most of the world has adopted as its official measurement system, so area naturally follows as the square metre. The United States remains one of the few countries where square feet stayed the everyday standard for describing floor area and real estate.
How is this different from the site's square footage or square yard calculators?
All three run the identical length-times-width formula; only the unit and typical audience differ. This instrument works in metres, matching how most of the world outside the US measures and lists floor area; the square footage version serves the everyday US unit, and the square yard version matches carpet, turf and paving trade pricing conventions.
How do I convert a result here into square feet?
Multiply the square metre figure by roughly 10.7639 — one square metre equals about 10.7639 square feet. A 20 sq m room, for example, works out to roughly 215.3 sq ft, useful when comparing a metric floor plan against a US-unit material quote.
My measurements are in centimetres — what do I enter?
Divide each measurement by 100 to convert centimetres to metres first. A room measuring 500 cm by 400 cm becomes 5 m by 4 m, which is what to enter into Length (m) and Width (m).
Can I use this for a non-rectangular room?
Not directly — length times width only gives a correct area for a rectangle. Split an L-shaped, triangular or otherwise irregular room into rectangular sections, calculate each section's area separately here, and add the results together for the total.
