How this instrument works

The Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers' Trunk Formula Method, published in the Guide for Plant Appraisal (10th ed., distributed by the International Society of Arboriculture), values a large tree by starting with its trunk's cross-sectional area — pi times the square of half its diameter at breast height — and multiplying that area by a regional dollar-per-square-inch base value. That raw figure is then discounted by three percentage ratings: how desirable and hardy the species is, how healthy and structurally sound this particular tree is, and how much its location contributes to the property.

This instrument works the arithmetic exactly as the method specifies, but it is an educational simplification, not a certified appraisal. The base value per square inch has no default here on purpose — it's licensed, regionally-specific data that a Regional Plant Appraisal Committee or a local consulting arborist maintains and updates, commonly landing somewhere in the range of $50 to $70 per square inch depending on region, and using a made-up or outdated figure will produce a made-up dollar value. More importantly, the three percentage ratings are meant to come from a trained, in-person condition assessment — an ISA Certified Arborist or a member of the American Society of Consulting Arborists inspecting the actual tree, not a guess plugged into a web form.

Worked example — a 20-inch DBH tree at $50 per sq in

Say a consulting arborist has assessed a mature shade tree at 20 inches DBH, and your region's base value for this species class is $50 per square inch of trunk area, with the arborist rating it 0.8 for species desirability, 0.7 for condition, and 0.8 for location. Trunk cross-sectional area works out to pi x (20/2)^2 = pi x 100 = 314.16 square inches.

Multiplying that area by the base value and all three ratings — 314.16 x 50 x 0.8 x 0.7 x 0.8 — gives an Appraised tree value of $7,037.17. Every input here matters roughly equally: halving any single rating roughly halves the final dollar figure, which is why a certified arborist's condition assessment carries so much weight in a real appraisal.

Scale changes fast with diameter, since trunk area grows with the square of DBH: a larger 30-inch tree with slightly higher ratings and a lower $40 base value still comes out to $18,321.77, while a smaller 10-inch tree with lower ratings across the board values at just $1,385.44 — illustrating how much a big, healthy, well-placed tree can be worth compared with a small or declining one.

What do the species, condition, and location class ratings mean?

Each is a 0-to-1 multiplier from the CTLA Trunk Formula Method. Species class rates how hardy, long-lived, and desirable the species generally is. Condition class rates this specific tree's health and structural soundness — trunk, roots, canopy, any damage or disease. Location class rates how much the tree contributes to its site — its placement, screening or shade value, and contribution to the property. All three are meant to come from a trained arborist's in-person inspection, not a rough guess.

Why does the formula use pi times (DBH/2) squared instead of just DBH?

Because the method values the tree by its trunk's cross-sectional area, not its diameter directly — and the area of a circle is pi times the radius squared. Since DBH is a diameter, dividing by 2 first gives the radius. That squaring matters: a tree with twice the diameter of another has roughly four times the trunk area, and therefore roughly four times the appraised value at the same ratings, which is a big part of why large legacy trees appraise so much higher than young replacements.

What is the CTLA, and where does this formula come from?

Is a bigger tree always worth proportionally more?

No — value grows faster than diameter, not slower. Because trunk area scales with the square of DBH, doubling a tree's diameter roughly quadruples its trunk area and, at equal condition and location ratings, roughly quadruples its appraised value too. That's one reason mature, large-diameter trees are disproportionately valuable compared with young replacements, and why removing an old tree can represent a much bigger loss than its size alone might suggest.
