How this instrument works
A triathlon's official finish time is the sum of five segments: the swim, the first transition (T1, swim-to-bike), the bike leg, the second transition (T2, bike-to-run), and the run — total time = swim + T1 + bike + T2 + run. Transitions count toward the official clock the same as the three racing legs do, which is why experienced triathletes train transitions specifically rather than treating them as a free pause between disciplines.
Breaking a goal or a result into five parts, rather than one total, is what makes the number useful for planning and for review. A 124-minute total split as 20 minutes of swimming, 2 minutes of T1, 60 minutes of biking, 2 minutes of T2, and 40 minutes of running tells a very different training story than the same 124 minutes split some other way — and comparing planned splits against actual splits after a race is how triathletes find out which leg, or which transition, cost them the most time relative to plan.

Worked example — a 124-minute sprint-to-Olympic split

Do transitions really count toward the official triathlon time?
Yes — T1 and T2 are timed as part of the race from the moment a triathlete enters the transition area to the moment they exit it, and that time is included in the official finish clock. That's why triathletes practice transitions specifically, laying out gear in a fixed order and rehearsing the swim-to-bike and bike-to-run changeovers, since a slow transition costs real time on the results sheet exactly like a slow bike split does.
What are typical transition times for T1 and T2?
Competitive age-groupers commonly run 1-3 minutes for each transition, with elite triathletes often under a minute; total transition time beyond about 4-5 minutes usually signals room to tighten up gear layout and changeover routine rather than a fitness limiter. Longer events like a half-iron or full Ironman tend to run slightly longer transitions than a sprint, simply because there's more gear to change.
How do sprint, Olympic, half-iron, and Ironman distances differ?
Sprint is roughly a 750 m swim, 20 km bike, and 5 km run; Olympic (standard) is 1500 m / 40 km / 10 km; half-iron (70.3) is 1900 m / 90 km / 21.1 km; and full Ironman is 3800 m / 180 km / 42.2 km — each step up roughly doubling the previous distances. Can I use this to check a finished race's official time?
Yes — enter the five splits from a results sheet or GPS watch (swim, T1, bike, T2, run) and the total should match the officially recorded finish time. If it doesn't, either a split was mis-recorded or the timing mats captured something slightly different from the watch, which is worth flagging with race organizers if the gap is more than a few seconds.
