How this instrument works

The starting principle behind ideal TV mounting height is simple: for the most natural, neck-strain-free viewing, the center of the screen should sit at your seated eye level when you're looking straight ahead. Forty-two inches from the floor to screen center is a commonly cited average for typical seating and sofa heights, which is why it shows up as a frequent rule-of-thumb recommendation — but it's genuinely just an average, and your own seated eye height depends on your specific sofa or chair height and your own body proportions.

This calculator adds one refinement beyond a flat eye-level rule: an adjustable tilt angle, for situations where mounting exactly at eye level isn't practical — above a fireplace, for instance, where the TV has to sit higher and tilt down toward the viewer, or a lower media-room mount tilted slightly up. Positive tilt angles raise the ideal mounting height above straight eye level; negative angles lower it, using simple trigonometry on your actual viewing distance.

At zero tilt (screen center exactly at eye level, looking perfectly straight ahead) the formula reduces to the mounting height simply equaling your eye height — the cleanest, most conservative recommendation, and generally the best starting point unless a specific room layout forces you to mount higher or lower.

Worked example — eye level versus an above-eye-level mount

A 42-inch seated eye height, 96 inches (8 feet) from the seat to the TV, with the screen mounted exactly at eye level (0 degrees tilt): mounting height = 42 + 96 x tan(0) = 42 + 0 = 42 inches exactly — screen center at eye level, the simplest and most conservative recommendation.

Now mount that same TV 10 degrees above eye level (a common scenario when a console or furniture piece forces the TV higher than ideal): mounting height = 42 + 96 x tan(10 degrees) = 42 + 96 x 0.17633 = 42 + 16.928 = 58.928 inches. And for a lower seated position (36-inch eye height, e.g. a low sofa) with a longer 120-inch throw and the screen tilted slightly below eye level (-5 degrees, for a lower media-room mount): 36 + 120 x tan(-5 degrees) = 36 + 120 x (-0.08749) = 36 − 10.499 = 25.501 inches.
