How this instrument works

Total weight here is one multiplication: the number of coins times the fixed mass the Royal Mint mints into every coin of that denomination. That fixed mass is not an estimate — the Mint specifies an exact target weight and a narrow manufacturing tolerance for each UK denomination, from the 1p up to the £2, so two coins of the same kind pulled from different years carry the same mass to a fraction of a gram. Multiplying a count by that known constant returns an exact total, not an average, provided every coin in the count is the same kind.

That exactness is what makes the sum useful outside a coin-collecting hobby. A commercial coin-counting scale runs this same arithmetic in reverse — weigh a jar of same-denomination coins, divide the reading by the known per-coin mass, and the count falls out without a single coin being touched. Charity treasurers weighing a collection tin, a business banking a bag of till coin, and anyone working out postage for a roll of coins in the mail all lean on the identical fixed-weight assumption this instrument runs forward instead of backward.

The formula breaks the moment the batch stops being uniform. Mixing denominations, including a coin from before a Mint redesign, or dropping in a foreign coin of similar size all produce a real scale reading that drifts from the calculated total — which is itself a useful signal, since a mismatch usually means something in the batch does not belong, rather than a fault in the arithmetic.

Worked example — ten current £1 coins

Set Number of coins to 10 and Weight per coin, grams to 8.0, the mass the Royal Mint currently mints into every 12-sided £1 coin. Multiplying the two gives a Total weight, grams reading of exactly 80.0 — the same figure a kitchen or postal scale returns if ten current pound coins are actually stacked on it.

That 80-gram total is the number a coin-counting scale, a charity treasurer, or a post office clerk relies on when a bag is weighed instead of hand-counted: divide a real scale reading by 8.0 and the coin count comes back exact, without anyone opening the bag or touching a single coin.

Questions

Why does the exact weight per coin matter so much here?

Because UK coins are minted to a fixed target weight with a narrow manufacturing tolerance for each denomination, not a rough average — the Royal Mint treats weight as a specification, not an accident. Entering the wrong per-coin figure, even by a tenth of a gram, throws off the total by that fraction times the whole count, which grows fast across a bag of hundreds of coins.

Can I add up coins of different denominations in one go?

No — the calculator assumes every coin entered shares one fixed weight, so mixing a 50p and a £1 in the same count produces a total that matches neither coin's real mass. Run the calculation once per denomination and add the separate totals together by hand, the way a till count sums several stacks of different bills.

Does this work for the old round £1 coin as well as the new 12-sided one?

Not in the same batch. The round £1 coin withdrawn from circulation in 2017 was minted to its own fixed weight, different from the current 12-sided coin's, so a jar holding both kinds will not weigh out to a single clean per-coin figure no matter which weight you enter. Sort old and new coins apart before weighing either group.

What actually uses this multiplication in practice?

Coin-counting scales, self-service coin machines, charity collection tins, till coin bagged for a bank deposit, and postage estimates for mailing a coin collection all rely on exactly this relationship — a known per-coin weight turning a scale reading into an exact count, or a count into an exact weight, depending on which direction you're working.

Why might my real scale reading not match the calculated total exactly?

Circulating coins pick up tiny amounts of wear from handling over the years, and the Mint's own manufacturing tolerance allows a small spread around the target weight, so a large real bag can drift a fraction of a percent from the calculated ideal. That drift is normal; a gap large enough to imply a whole extra or missing coin usually means the batch isn't uniform.

Where do I find the official weight for a UK denomination other than the £1?

The Royal Mint publishes the exact specification — weight, diameter, and composition — for every current UK coin, from the 1p through the £2, on its own site and through GOV.UK.
