How this instrument works

That visible strip is the panel's exposure, and it's the dimension that actually determines how much wall area one panel covers, not the panel's full manufactured width.
Exposure varies meaningfully by siding profile. A common "double-4" panel — two 4-inch courses molded into one 12-foot panel — exposes 8 inches of total coverage height per panel; a "double-4.5" profile exposes 9 inches, a "double-5" exposes 10, and single-course premium profiles have their own figures again. Rather than assume one universal panels-per-square figure, this calculator asks for your panel's length and exposure directly, so the coverage-per-panel math reflects the actual profile you're installing.
As with siding waste generally, this calculator applies a waste allowance on top of the raw coverage math — 10% is a commonly cited starting point for a straightforward elevation, with more complex rooflines, corners, and openings pushing that figure higher in practice. Net wall area is a direct input here as well, so measure or calculate it (gross wall area minus windows, doors, and other openings) before entering it.

Worked example — 1,500 sq ft in a double-4 profile
A home has 1,500 sq ft of net wall area, sided in a standard double-4 profile (two 4-inch courses per 12-foot panel, 8 inches of total exposure) with a 10% waste allowance. Coverage per panel = 12 × (8/12) = 8 sq ft. Adjusted area = 1,500 × 1.10 = 1,650 sq ft. Panels needed = ceil(1,650 / 8) = ceil(206.25) = 207 panels.
Switch to a double-4.5 profile (9-inch exposure) on a larger 2,000 sq ft elevation: coverage per panel rises to 12 × 0.75 = 9 sq ft; adjusted area = 2,200 sq ft; panels needed = ceil(2,200 / 9) = ceil(244.444) = 245. Even though this job covers more area, the wider exposure per panel means proportionally more coverage from each one compared with the narrower double-4 profile.
