How this instrument works

Retinol Activity Equivalents, RAE, are the standard unit for vitamin A intake because they account for how efficiently the body actually converts each source into usable retinol. International Units, IU, are the older unit still printed on many supplement labels. The two do not convert at one fixed rate the way some other vitamins do: preformed vitamin A, the retinol found in animal foods and most supplements, converts at 3.33 IU per mcg RAE, while beta-carotene from food converts at a far less efficient 20 IU per mcg RAE, because the body only partially transforms plant-based provitamin A into retinol it can actually use.

The gap exists because absorption and conversion are biological bottlenecks, not fixed chemistry. Preformed retinol is essentially ready to use once absorbed, so its IU-to-RAE relationship stays efficient and constant. Beta-carotene from a carrot or a serving of spinach has to be cleaved and converted inside the intestinal wall, a process the body regulates and slows as intake rises, so far more beta-carotene by weight is needed to deliver the same amount of usable vitamin A — hence the much larger IU figure for an identical RAE target. The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements sets the adult RDA at 900 mcg RAE for men and 700 mcg RAE for women, figures this instrument's default reflects for the preformed-source calculation.

The two sources also carry a real safety asymmetry worth stating plainly. Preformed vitamin A is fat-soluble and accumulates in the liver; taken in excess, particularly from concentrated supplements over a sustained period, it can reach toxic levels, and the Institute of Medicine's Dietary Reference Intakes set a tolerable upper limit specifically for preformed vitamin A in adults. Beta-carotene from food does not carry that same risk, because the body's own conversion step slows as intake climbs, capping how much retinol actually gets produced regardless of how much beta-carotene was eaten — very high intakes can tint skin a harmless yellow-orange, which fades once intake drops.

Worked example — 900 mcg RAE, preformed source

900 mcg RAE of preformed vitamin A, the adult male RDA, times the 3.33 IU-per-mcg-RAE factor: 900 × 3.33 = 2997 IU — close enough to the commonly rounded 3000 IU figure that the two are often used interchangeably, though 2997 is the precise arithmetic result.

Switch the source without changing the RAE amount and the IU figure moves a great deal. 700 mcg RAE, the adult female RDA, sourced from beta-carotene in food uses the 20 IU-per-mcg-RAE factor instead: 700 × 20 = 14000 IU — a far larger number for a smaller RAE amount, purely because food beta-carotene converts so much less efficiently. A smaller preformed dose of 300 mcg RAE gives 300 × 3.33 = 999 IU.

Questions

Why doesn't vitamin A use one fixed IU-to-mcg conversion like vitamin D does?

Because vitamin A's biological activity depends on where it comes from, while vitamin D's does not. A microgram of vitamin D behaves the same way regardless of source, so one factor covers every case. Vitamin A splits into preformed retinol, which the body absorbs and uses efficiently, and provitamin A carotenoids like beta-carotene, which the body must first convert and does so at a rate that varies. RAE units were created specifically to express those different sources on one honest, comparable scale, and IU is the older unit that still needs a source-specific factor to translate into RAE.

Why is the food beta-carotene factor (20) so much larger than the retinol factor (3.33)?

Because it takes roughly six times as much beta-carotene, by weight, from food to deliver the same amount of usable vitamin A that a smaller amount of preformed retinol delivers directly. The body's intestinal conversion step is inefficient and self-limiting, so a large IU number sourced from food beta-carotene can still equal a modest RAE amount; the two forms are not interchangeable gram for gram, only after their respective conversion factors are applied.

Is beta-carotene from a supplement treated the same as beta-carotene from food?

No, and this calculator's Source options reflect that split. Supplemental beta-carotene, typically delivered in an oil-based capsule, absorbs more efficiently than beta-carotene still bound up in plant cell walls, so it shares the same 3.33 IU-per-mcg-RAE factor as preformed retinol rather than the food-source figure of 20. Only beta-carotene eaten as part of whole food, where digestion first has to break it free from plant tissue, uses the less efficient factor.

Can preformed vitamin A be toxic, and does beta-carotene carry the same risk?

Is 2997 IU the same thing as the commonly cited 3000 IU figure?

Effectively yes — 900 mcg RAE of preformed vitamin A works out to exactly 2997 IU by the arithmetic, and 3000 IU is simply that figure rounded to a tidier number for everyday conversation and older labeling conventions. The small gap has no practical significance; it exists only because 3.33 is itself a rounding of the more precise underlying ratio between IU and mcg RAE for preformed vitamin A.
