The widely repeated planning convention, echoed by wedding-planning sites like The Knot, is about one drink per guest per hour — though this varies by crowd, and consumption is typically heavier in the first hour or two before tapering off as the night goes on.

This calculator exposes that rate as an adjustable input rather than a hidden constant, since your guest list might reasonably run above or below the standard 1-per-hour average. Multiply guests by hours by your chosen rate and you get a total drink count for the whole reception — the number every other bar decision flows from.

From that single total, this calculator also shows three "if you served only this one type" bottle equivalents — all wine, all beer, or all liquor — using standard bar-industry conversions (a 750 mL wine bottle pours 5 standard 5-oz glasses; a 750 mL liquor bottle pours about 17 standard 1.5-oz shots). These aren't a recommended beverage mix, since that's genuinely up to you and your guests' preferences — they're reference points to help you translate a drink total into a shopping list, whatever combination of wine, beer, and spirits you actually plan to serve.

Questions

Is one drink per guest per hour realistic?

It's a commonly used starting average, and a reasonable one for planning purposes, but real consumption isn't perfectly steady across an event — guests typically drink more in the first hour or two, especially during cocktail hour, and taper off as the night goes on and food is served. Treat the 1-per-hour rate as an average across the whole reception rather than a literal per-hour pace, and adjust it up or down based on your specific crowd.

Should the drink rate be higher or lower for my crowd?

It depends on your guests: a younger, more social crowd or an open-bar cocktail-heavy reception often runs above the 1/hour average, while a more subdued crowd, an event with a strong food focus, or one with many non-drinkers or designated drivers often runs below it. What do the wine, beer, and liquor bottle totals actually mean?

Each one answers a hypothetical: "if every single drink at this reception were wine (or beer, or liquor), how many bottles would that take?" They're not a recommendation to serve only one type — real weddings almost always mix all three. Use them as reference points to sanity-check your actual order: if you're planning 40% wine, 30% beer, and 30% liquor, you can apply those percentages to the totalDrinks figure and cross-check against each bottle-equivalent number.

How many standard drinks does a keg or a case of wine cover?

A standard half-barrel keg holds roughly the equivalent of about 165 twelve-ounce beers, and a standard case of wine is 12 bottles, or about 60 five-oz glasses using this calculator's 5-glasses-per-bottle conversion. Does this account for non-alcoholic drinks too?

No — this calculator is scoped to alcoholic drink planning specifically.
