How this instrument works

Month traces back to moon: Old English monaþ shares a root with mona, and the original month was one lunar cycle, a synodic period averaging 29.53059 days from new moon to new moon. Twelve of those total 354.37 days, eleven short of a solar year, which is exactly why purely lunar calendars drift against the seasons and why most civil calendars abandoned strict moon-months many centuries ago.

Modern Gregorian months keep the old name but not the old length: they run anywhere from 28 to 31 days, so no single week-to-month ratio could ever be exact for all twelve. Engineers, actuaries and this sheet sidestep that by adopting an average instead — one twelfth of a 365.25-day Julian year, which comes to 30.4375 days, or 2,629,800 seconds. Dividing a week's 604,800 seconds by that figure gives 0.229979466119, a fraction equal exactly to 112/487. Worked example — 8 weeks pregnant is not quite two months

Pregnancy gets dated in weeks from the first day of the last period, and expectant parents translate that into months out of habit — eight weeks along, they say, must be about two months. Why isn't the factor a tidier number like 0.23?
