How this instrument works
Percent weight gain is the fraction of a starting figure that has been added, expressed out of 100: subtract the starting reading from the current one, divide by the starting reading, and multiply by 100. It is the exact mirror of this site's Weight Loss Percentage calculator, which runs the same subtraction in the other order; here, a current weight above the starting weight produces a positive percentage instead of a negative one. The formula works in any consistent unit — kilograms, pounds, stone — because the units cancel in the division, leaving a pure ratio independent of how much anyone weighed to start.
Percentage-based tracking has real precedent in clinical and nutrition-support settings, not only in casual weight tracking. Worked example — 60 units up to 66
A starting reading of 60 and a current reading of 66: the increase is 66 − 60 = 6, divided by the starting figure of 60 gives 0.10, times 100 gives exactly 10% gained. Whether those units are kilograms or pounds, the answer is the same ratio.
Scale changes the raw numbers, not the shape of the arithmetic. A rise from 50 to 55 gains 5 units and also computes to exactly 10%, since 5 is one-tenth of the 50 starting figure — a smaller starting point reaching the same percentage from a smaller raw gain. A rise from 70 to 71.5, just 1.5 units, computes to (71.5 − 70) / 70 × 100 ≈ 2.14% — a small, early change that a percentage view represents honestly as modest, exactly what it is.

Only in which direction the change runs — the underlying ratio is identical. Weight Loss Percentage subtracts the current reading from the starting one; this calculator subtracts the starting reading from the current one, so a rise produces a positive percentage instead of the negative number the loss version would show for the same movement. Is percentage-based tracking actually used clinically for weight gain?
Yes, with real precedent. Can I use this formula for weight loss by entering a lower current weight?
The arithmetic still runs, but the sign flips rather than the label changing. If the current weight is lower than the starting weight, this formula returns a negative percentage, which reads as a loss expressed on the gain calculator's terms. Should I compare single-day readings or averages over time?
Averages over time, generally. A single day's weight swings several units from water, sodium, food volume, and digestion alone, so a percentage built from two single-day readings can be noisy and can overstate or understate a real trend. Comparing weekly or monthly averages and computing the percentage from those steadier numbers gives a more honest picture of whether a gain is actually happening and how fast.
