How this instrument works
This site's pregnancy weight gain calculator answers one question: what's the recommended total range for the whole pregnancy, by pre-pregnancy BMI category? This calculator answers a different, more specific one — given a starting BMI category and a current week, how much gain would put someone roughly on track right now, rather than only at the finish line. The first 13 weeks are modeled as a flat estimate, about 2.5 lb total regardless of starting BMI, scaled linearly by week: at week 13, that fraction reaches 1, and the full 2.5 lb applies. After week 13, gain adds up at a steady weekly rate that does depend on BMI category — 1.13 lb a week if underweight, 0.93 if normal weight, 0.62 if overweight, 0.49 if obese.
Those weekly figures aren't invented separately from the IOM's total ranges — they're the pace implied by spreading each category's recommended total gain across the roughly 27 weeks of the second and third trimesters, on top of the fixed first-trimester estimate. A 2015 paper by Gilmore and Redman, examining how gestational weight gain is measured and reported, underscored why a single total-range figure leaves an open question until it's translated into an expected trajectory over time — exactly the gap this calculator's week-by-week distribution is built to close.
Real pregnancy weight gain rarely tracks a smooth line. Morning sickness can flatten or even reverse gain in the first trimester for some people, appetite and water retention swing week to week in later pregnancy, and a single prenatal-visit weigh-in reflects whatever that particular day happened to bring. This estimate is a population-average trajectory meant to flag whether someone is roughly on track at a glance, not a strict weekly target to hit exactly.

Worked example — three starting points, three different weeks
Normal-weight category, week 20: past the first-trimester cutoff of 13, so gain = 2.5 + 0.93 × (20 − 13) = 2.5 + 0.93 × 7 = 2.5 + 6.51 = 9.01 lb by week 20.
Underweight category, week 30: gain = 2.5 + 1.13 × (30 − 13) = 2.5 + 1.13 × 17 = 2.5 + 19.21 = 21.71 lb by week 30. Obese category, week 10 — still inside the first trimester: gain = 2.5 × (10/13) = 1.92 lb, using only the flat estimate since week 13 hasn't been reached yet.
Questions
How is this different from the existing pregnancy weight gain calculator on this site?
That calculator gives the endpoint: the IOM's recommended total range and average weekly pace for a full pregnancy, by BMI category. This one distributes that same guidance across the actual weeks, answering how much gain would put someone roughly on track by a specific week rather than only by delivery — useful mid-pregnancy, when the total range alone doesn't say much about right now.
Why does the first trimester use a flat estimate instead of the BMI-based weekly rate?
Because gain in the first 13 weeks is typically small and doesn't vary much by starting BMI category the way second- and third-trimester gain does — commonly just a few pounds total, regardless of where someone started. This calculator models that period as a flat 2.5 lb, scaled linearly toward that figure as the weeks pass, then switches to the BMI-dependent weekly rate once the second trimester begins.
Is real weight gain actually this smooth week to week?
No — rarely. Nausea can slow or even reverse gain early on, and appetite, fluid retention, and normal day-to-day variation all move the number around in later pregnancy. This is a population-average estimate meant to flag whether someone is roughly on track, not a strict weekly target, so a single week that comes in above or below the estimate isn't on its own a cause for concern.
Where do the weekly rates by BMI category come from?
They're derived from the IOM 2009 total recommended ranges, spread across the roughly 27 weeks that follow the first trimester: a higher weekly pace for someone who starts underweight (1.13 lb/week), progressively lower rates for normal weight (0.93), overweight (0.62), and obese (0.49) starting points, mirroring the same logic behind the total-range calculator's endpoints.
What if actual gain is well above or below the estimate at a given week?
It's worth a conversation with the clinician managing the pregnancy rather than a cause for alarm on its own — pregnancies vary, and a single data point at one prenatal visit doesn't capture the whole trajectory. Persistent, large gaps between actual and estimated gain across several visits are more informative than any one week's reading.
Does this calculator apply to twin or multiple pregnancies?
No. Like the site's total-range pregnancy weight gain calculator, this distribution is built on the IOM's single-fetus guidelines; twins and higher-order pregnancies follow separate, higher provisional targets that neither calculator computes.
