How this instrument works
Yards were physical objects long before becoming numbers: one bronze bar cast in 1845, legalised ten years later and kept at Westminster, whose length crept as its alloy aged. American practice had already drifted apart. Under Mendenhall's order of 1893, US surveyors worked from yards defined as 3600⁄3937 metre, slightly longer than Britain's bar, so two nations speaking one language disagreed about distance by nearly four parts per million.
That disagreement closed on 1 July 1959, when standards laboratories in America, Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa adopted one common international yard of 0.9144 metre. Any round-ish value between both old bars would have served; 0.9144 was chosen because it makes an inch land on 25.4 mm precisely, and yards hold 36 inches — 36 × 25.4 mm = 914.4 mm. Feet, chains, furlongs and statute miles all descend from that single line.
Yards survive wherever ground gets marked or cloth gets cut. American football measures its gridiron in them, cricket pitches its ball across 22 yards (one surveyor's chain), golf cards post hole lengths in them, and drapery counters still cut by yard while metric neighbours cut by metre. Yards fall just short of metres, so one metre runs 9.36 per cent longer — close enough to swap by eye, far too different to swap on paper.

Worked example — painting 100 yards onto metric turf
One stadium in Frankfurt takes an American football fixture, and its grounds crew must paint that field onto turf already striped for metric play. Distance between goal lines is 100 yards. Enter 100 into Yards (yd); Metres (m) returns 91.44, exactly, with no remainder hiding in later digits. Each ten-yard stripe therefore lands every 9.144 m, and nobody has to argue about where rounding went.
Push further and that exactness survives. Two end zones add 10 yards apiece, making full 120-yard length 109.728 m, while 53⅓-yard width comes to 48.768 m. Had this crew used America's pre-1959 survey yard, 100 yards would read 91.4401829 m — under two tenths of one millimetre out, invisible on turf, yet 20 cm adrift across 100 km of state survey grid.
Questions
Is 0.9144 exact, or has it been rounded for convenience?
Exact, and exact by choice. A yard is defined as 0.9144 metre — that is its definition, not a measurement someone took and truncated. Because 36 inches make a yard, an inch follows at 25.4 mm and a foot at 0.3048 m, all with zero uncertainty. Any error you see in a result here comes from decimals dropped at display time, never from a factor.
Do imperial and US customary yards differ?
Not since 1959 — both are 0.9144 metre, so length converts identically either side of an ocean. Volume is where those systems still part company: a US gallon is 3.785 L against an imperial gallon's 4.546 L. One historical exception in length was America's survey yard, 3600⁄3937 metre, retained for geodetic work until NIST and NOAA retired it at the close of 2022.
How many yards make 100 metres?
109.361 yards, since one metre is 1.0936133 yards. That gap explains why sprinters stopped racing 100 yards: a 100-metre dash is roughly 9.4 yards longer, and world records across those two distances were never comparable. Athletics dropped imperial track events during the 1970s; a 440-yard lap became 400 m, shortening it by about 2.34 m.
Why did my cubic yards of concrete convert wrongly?
Because volume needs a cubed factor, not a linear one. One cubic yard is 0.9144³ = 0.764554857984 cubic metres — near enough three-quarters, not nine-tenths. Order 10 cubic yards of ready-mix from a metric batching plant and you want 7.646 m³; asking for 9.144 m³ buys you a fifth more concrete than your forms can hold. Areas take a squared factor, 0.83612736 m² per square yard.
Is there a quick way to estimate this in my head?
Knock a twelfth off your yardage. Eleven-twelfths is 0.91667, which overshoots true metres by a quarter of one per cent, so a 300-yard golf drive estimates at 275 m against a true 274.32 m. For rougher work, subtracting a tenth and adding back one per cent gets you closer. Both shortcuts are fine for pacing a garden and wrong for anything a surveyor signs.
How precise should my answer be?
Match your measurement, not your calculator. Multiplying by 0.9144 hands back four extra decimal places whether or not they mean anything: a fence paced at 40 yards is 36.576 m on screen, but you only really knew that distance to a yard, so 37 m is honest reporting. Keep full precision through intermediate steps, then round once at the end.
