How this instrument works
Decade reaches English through Latin decas from Greek dekas, meaning one group of ten — same root behind Rome's habit of binding Livy's history into ten-book sets. It never named any fixed run of seconds; it named ten of something already being counted. Applied to time, it inherits whichever year you brought with you, which is why this ten-to-one ratio survives every argument about calendars.
Years carry all of that ambiguity. Astronomers standardised their Julian year at exactly 365.25 days — 31,557,600 seconds, that quantity hidden inside every light-year. Civil life runs on Gregorian mean years of 365.2425 days, while seasons themselves track tropical years near 365.24219 days. Neither unit appears in SI at all: BIPM's list of non-SI units accepted for use stops at one day of 86,400 seconds. Geologists dodge that quarrel by writing a for annus, then stacking prefixes — ka, Ma, Ga.
Ten-year blocks form working grain across several fields. Climate records get published as trends per decade because one year of weather drowns any signal. America has counted its population every tenth year since 1790 because Article I of its constitution demands decennial returns. American astronomy sets priorities through decadal surveys, most recently Astro2020. Manufacturers lean on identical blocks: photovoltaic module performance warranties usually run 25 years, which is where this sheet's opening figure comes from.
Two neighbouring adjectives cause trouble. Decennial describes something happening once every ten years, as with census returns; decadal describes something spanning or averaged across ten years, as with warming trends and astronomy's priority reports. Older legal drafting prefers decennium for one such period. All three reduce to identical arithmetic here — multiply by one tenth — though editors will notice if you swap them.

- Fractions are welcome. Years (yr) steps in thousandths, so 7.5 yr reads 0.75 dec and six months reads 0.05 dec.
- Reversing it, multiply your Decades (dec) figure by ten — 3.4 dec is 34 yr — since both directions are reciprocal by definition.
- Negative entries are refused: spans here have length but no direction, so enter zero or more.
Worked example — 25-year solar warranty
Rooftop arrays ship with 25-year performance warranties, and your finance team wants that horizon in ten-year blocks its depreciation model already uses. Enter 25 into Years (yr) and Decades (dec) returns 2.5 — two full blocks plus half of one more.
Arithmetic this simple still hides one subtlety worth knowing. Here 25 × 0.1 lands on 2.5 with nothing left over, because 2.5 has an exact binary form. Not every entry behaves so well. Ask any machine for 29 × 0.1 and it answers 2.9000000000000004, since one tenth has no finite binary expansion. That error lives around its sixteenth digit and never reaches your printed result, but it explains stray tails spreadsheets sometimes show where you expected clean quotients.

Is this 0.1 factor exact or rounded?
Exact. Decades are defined as ten years, so this is pure counting with no physical measurement standing behind it — unlike feet to metres, where treaty negotiators had to fix their number. Whichever year you supply, Julian, Gregorian, or tropical, ten of them make one decade, and any uncertainty in that year cancels because identical years sit on both sides of this ratio.
Does one decade run 2020 to 2029 or 2021 to 2030?
Both, depending on whether you are naming or counting. Popular usage groups years by their shared tens digit, so 2020s means 2020 through 2029. Strict ordinal counting begins at AD 1 — Gregorian reckoning has no year zero — which places our 203rd decade at 2021 through 2030. That same dispute flared over millennium boundaries in 1999. This converter handles spans rather than calendar edges, so it stays clear of any argument.
How many days sit inside one decade?
Either 3652 or 3653 under Gregorian rules, depending on how many 29 Februarys fall inside your span. Long-run mean is 3652.425 days, following from mean years of 365.2425 days. Astronomers instead use Julian decades of exactly 3652.5 days, or 315,576,000 seconds, that value underlying every light-year. Choose your convention before multiplying, because these two differ by roughly two hours per decade.
Does decade mean ten years in electronics too?
No, and that clash catches people out. In electronics, acoustics, and control theory, one decade means any factor of ten in frequency, which is why filter roll-off gets quoted as 20 dB per decade and why bench resistance boxes are called decade boxes. No time is involved in that sense whatsoever. Ten-year decades belong to demography, climate science, and finance; ratio decades belong on Bode plots.
Why are decades absent from SI?
Because SI builds upward from one second, and no whole number of seconds makes any year. BIPM's table of non-SI units accepted for use alongside SI stops at one day, defined as 86,400 seconds; year lengths depend on which astronomical cycle you follow, so they cannot be pinned down that way. Can I convert half-lives quoted in years?
Yes, and radionuclide work is one frequent reason to reach for this sheet. Caesium-137 has half-life near 30.08 years, or about 3.008 dec; strontium-90 sits at roughly 28.9 years, and tritium at 12.32 years is just over 1.2 dec. Dividing by ten relabels your axis and leaves any decay constant untouched. Convert to days or seconds only where whatever equation you are feeding demands those units.
