How this instrument works
Pace is simply time divided by distance: how many minutes it takes to cover one kilometre at a given effort. For the 5K — the 5,000-metre distance raced on roads, trails and track alike — pace per kilometre is the standard unit coaches and runners use to plan intervals, tempo runs and race splits, because five even kilometre splits are easy to check against a watch on the move.
This instrument takes the finish time you enter, in minutes, and the distance covered, in kilometres, and divides one by the other. The relationship holds regardless of how fast or slow the run was: a 30:00 5K and a 20:00 5K are both just time over distance, so the same division applies whether you are pacing a first 5K or chasing a personal best years into training.
Because the 5K is raced over a fixed, short distance, pace here tends to sit close to a runner's lactate-threshold or VO2-max effort rather than the more conservative pace held for a half marathon or marathon. Knowing a target pace per kilometre in advance lets a runner check the watch at each kilometre marker and correct course before the effort gets away from them in the closing stages.
- Enter Finish time (minutes) — your actual or goal 5K time; decimals are fine for seconds, e.g. 24.5 for 24:30.
- Enter Distance (km) — leave it at 5 for a standard 5K, or adjust it if you ran a course that measured slightly long or short.
- Read Pace (min per km) — this is the average pace across the whole run, not any single kilometre split.
- Multiply the pace by 5 to sanity-check it against the finish time you entered; the two figures should agree.
- Distance must be greater than zero — the instrument will prompt you if it is left at zero or blank.
Worked example — a 30-minute 5K
Enter 30 into Finish time (minutes) and 5 into Distance (km) — a 30:00 clocking over the standard 5K distance, a common goal for runners moving from beginner to intermediate pace. Pace reads 6.00, meaning 6 minutes per kilometre, written as 6:00/km.
Check it: five kilometres at 6:00 per kilometre comes to 5 × 6 = 30 minutes, matching the finish time exactly. That even 6:00/km split also travels well onto a track — a lap of a standard 400 m circuit close to that pace takes about 2:24, so four laps and a bit covers the kilometre in almost exactly that time.
Questions
What's a good 5K pace for a beginner?
Most new runners finish a 5K somewhere between 6:30 and 8:30 per kilometre, working out to roughly 32 to 42 minutes for the full distance. There's no single 'correct' pace — enter your own goal time into this instrument and it converts straight to a per-kilometre figure you can check against at each kilometre marker on race day.
Does this calculator work in miles instead of kilometres?
This page is set up for kilometres, since the 5K is a metric distance (5,000 m) and per-kilometre splits are the standard way runners pace it. If a mile-based figure is more useful, this site's other pace instruments use the identical time ÷ distance formula with distance entered in miles instead — the maths doesn't change, only the unit.
How is pace different from speed?
Pace is time per unit distance, in minutes per kilometre; speed is distance per unit time, in kilometres per hour. They describe the same run from opposite directions — a smaller pace number means running faster, while a larger speed number means the same thing. Runners generally favour pace because splits on a watch are easiest to read off in minutes per kilometre.
Why does 5K pace feel so much harder than marathon pace?
Because a 5K is raced close to lactate-threshold or VO2-max effort, sustained for roughly 15 to 30 minutes, while a marathon is held at a pace a runner can sustain aerobically for hours. The formula behind both is identical — time divided by distance — but the physiological cost of holding a given pace for 5 kilometres versus 42 is very different.
Can I use this to work out my race-day kilometre splits?
Yes — once a target pace per kilometre is set, multiply it by 1, 2, 3 and 4 to get a target clock time at each kilometre marker, and by 5 to confirm the finish time. Even, consistent splits close to that pace are generally a more reliable pacing strategy on race day than starting fast and fading over the closing kilometres.
What if I ran a course that wasn't exactly 5 km?
Enter the actual distance covered — from a GPS watch or a certified course measurement — into Distance (km) rather than leaving it at 5. The instrument still divides the entered time by whatever distance is entered, so a 5.08 km GPS-measured 'about-5K' gives an accurate pace rather than one skewed by course error.
