How this instrument works
A split is the time for one piece of a longer run — a single lap on a track, one mile of a marathon, one interval in a workout — measured on its own rather than as a running average from the start. This calculator takes that one segment's time and distance and returns its pace, the same division as any pace calculation, but scoped deliberately to a single chunk of a bigger effort.
Splits matter because an average pace across a whole race can hide a lot of variation within it. Two runners can finish a 10K in the identical 45:00, one holding a flat 7:14 per mile the whole way and the other opening at 6:30 per mile and fading to 8:00 per mile by the end — the finishing time is the same, but the pacing story, and what it says about training and race execution, is completely different. Reading pace segment by segment is how that story gets told.
Coaches and racers use per-segment pace two ways: checking interval-workout consistency, are the reps coming in evenly or fading, and checking race-pacing strategy, even splits, a positive split where the second half slows, or a negative split where the second half speeds up. A negative-split strategy — deliberately running the back half faster than the front half — is widely recommended for distance racing because it reduces the risk of the early over-pacing that leads to a severe late-race fade.

Worked example — an 8:00 lap over one unit
Enter a segment time of 8 minutes and a segment distance of 1 unit. Segment pace = 8 ÷ 1 = 8.00 minutes per unit — an 8:00 split, the kind of single-lap or single-mile entry a runner reads off a watch mid-race and logs on the spot, separate from the overall running average.

How is a split different from average pace?
Average pace is the total time divided by the total distance across an entire run, smoothing over any variation within it. What is a negative split and why do coaches recommend it?
A negative split means running the second half of a race faster than the first half — for example, a 10K with a 23:00 first 5K and a 22:30 second 5K. It's widely recommended in distance running because starting conservatively conserves glycogen and reduces the risk of the sharp late-race slowdown that comes from over-pacing the first half, so the runner has speed in reserve rather than fighting to hold on.
Can I use this for swimming or cycling splits, not just running?

My interval times are getting slower each rep — what does that mean?
It usually means the pace set on the first rep wasn't sustainable for the full workout, whether from starting too aggressively, insufficient recovery between reps, or accumulated fatigue from earlier training. Comparing each rep's split pace against the first is the standard way to catch this during a workout rather than only noticing it afterward from a total time.
