How this instrument works
Unlike formula intake, which scales fairly steadily with a baby's weight, an exclusively breastfed baby's total daily volume settles into a fairly stable figure — commonly cited as about 25 ounces (750 mL) a day — and holds roughly there from about one month of age through around six months, even as the baby keeps growing. This calculator takes that commonly-cited daily total and divides it by however many times a day the baby feeds, giving a typical per-feeding volume: eight feedings a day works out to about 3.13 ounces each; ten shorter feedings work out to about 2.5.
The 25-ounce figure is a round, widely-cited average rather than a single fixed truth, and research measuring actual intake finds some spread around it. A frequently referenced study that weighed babies before and after every feed found an average closer to 28 ounces a day, somewhat higher than the round number, with a normal range across babies spanning roughly 19 to 30 ounces. Individual infants land anywhere in that band and still feed entirely normally; the 25-ounce figure is a convenient midpoint for this estimate, not a target.
Why does the total plateau instead of climbing the way it would for a growing toddler eating solid food? Two things offset each other as a nursing baby ages: calorie needs keep rising with growth, but breastmilk's own calorie density and the baby's feeding efficiency — how much they extract per minute at the breast — both improve with practice and time. The extra energy a bigger infant needs ends up coming from getting more out of roughly the same volume, not from steadily drinking more of it, which is exactly why formula's weight-scaling rule doesn't carry over here.

Worked example — 8 feedings a day
Eight feedings in 24 hours: 25 ÷ 8 = 3.125 ounces per feeding, on average. Space the same daily total across six longer feedings instead and each one grows: 25 ÷ 6 ≈ 4.17 ounces.
Spread it across ten shorter, more frequent feedings and each one shrinks to 25 ÷ 10 = 2.5 ounces — three quite different-looking feeding patterns, all adding up to the same roughly 25-ounce day.

Why does formula scale with weight but breastmilk doesn't?

No — this model describes exclusively or near-exclusively breastfed infants roughly 1 to 6 months old. Once solid foods make up a meaningful share of intake, typically from around six months onward, milk volume needs shift and this flat daily-total model no longer applies the same way.
Why isn't there a weight input like the formula calculator?
Because unlike formula intake, breastmilk volume doesn't track a baby's size closely in this age range; the research behind the commonly-cited daily total finds it holds fairly steady across infants of different sizes. Adding a weight input would imply a precision the underlying data doesn't actually support.
