How this instrument works

Under the short scale used throughout science, finance and everyday English today, each new named magnitude is a thousand times the last: a million is 10⁶, a billion is 10⁹, a trillion is 10¹². That clean pattern is what makes this sheet's factor a flat 0.001 — divide any billion figure by a thousand and the trillion figure falls straight out, no remainder, no rounding.

It was not always this tidy. A long scale once dominant across much of continental Europe defined billion as 10¹² and trillion as 10¹⁸, stepping up by a million each time rather than a thousand, with an intermediate term, milliard, standing in for what the short scale simply calls a billion. Britain used the long scale officially for generations before its government confirmed a move to the short scale in 1974, aligning with American usage that had already become dominant in international finance and science.

France's own history runs the opposite direction from Britain's. Having drifted onto the short scale for parts of the nineteenth century, France moved back to the long scale afterward — the idea was raised at the 1948 General Conference on Weights and Measures and formally confirmed by French government decree in 1961. Worked example — reading a $500 billion figure in trillions
