How this instrument works
This is the everyday mental-math shortcut most people already do in their heads, made exact: subtract the age from the reference date and land on a birth year. It's the calculation behind quick questions like 'so they'd have been born around...' or checking which generational cohort — Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X, Boomer — someone's birth year falls into.
Like any birth-year subtraction, the result is an estimate rather than an exact date: it assumes the birthday for the given age has already happened by the reference point, which is true most of the time but not in the weeks just before someone's actual birthday. For that reason, treat the output as accurate to within twelve months rather than a guaranteed exact figure.

Worked example — age 34 in 2026
Enter 34 as the age and 2026 as the current year. Estimated birth year reads 1992 — a plain 2026 minus 34.
Under the widely used Pew Research boundaries (Millennials born 1981-1996), 1992 falls solidly within the Millennial generation rather than near the Gen X cutoff — a good illustration of why this instrument reports a birth year, not a generational label: the cohort cutoffs themselves vary by source.
Questions
How accurate is a birth year worked out this way?
Accurate to within twelve months. If the person's birthday for the given age has already happened this year, the result is their exact birth year; if it hasn't happened yet, the true figure is one earlier than this calculation returns, since the age they're reporting still belongs to the prior twelve-month mark.
What generation does a given birth year belong to?
That depends on which set of generational cutoffs you use — Pew Research Center, for instance, places Millennials as born 1981-1996 and Generation Z as 1997 onward. This instrument only computes the birth year itself; matching it to a generational label is a separate step using whichever definition you trust.
Can I use this for someone whose exact age I don't know precisely?
You can, but the result inherits whatever uncertainty is in the age you enter — if you're only estimating someone's age within a year or two, the estimate comes out just as approximate. For an exact result, you need either their real birth date or a precisely known age.
Why not just ask someone their birth year directly?
You usually would — this instrument is for situations where only an age was given (a form, a news article, a guess) and you want the implied birth year quickly, without doing the subtraction in your head.
