Standing is barely more energetic than sitting — the Compendium of Physical Activities rates quiet standing at just 1.3 MET, only slightly above the roughly 1.0 MET baseline for sitting quietly. That's why "stand more" advice for desk workers is framed around accumulated hours, not as a substitute for actual exercise: the calorie gap per minute is small, and it only adds up to something meaningful across a full workday.

This calculator offers three Compendium-measured standing variants: standing quietly (1.3 MET, code 07040), standing with fidgeting or small movements (1.5 MET, code 07041), and standing while watching TV (1.3 MET, code 07045). The fidgeting option burns noticeably more, which lines up with what exercise physiologists call NEAT — non-exercise activity thermogenesis — the energy cost of small, often unconscious movement like shifting weight, pacing, or tapping a foot.

The math is the same MET formula used across this site: kcal = MET x body weight in kilograms x duration in hours. Worked example — standing quietly, 70 kg, 60 minutes

A 70 kg office worker using a standing desk for a full 60-minute stretch, standing quietly rather than fidgeting (1.3 MET, Compendium code 07040): 1.3 x 70 x 1 = 91 kcal for that hour — noticeably less than a brisk walk, but still measurably more than the same hour spent sitting.

Switch to the fidgeting variant (1.5 MET) for an 80 kg person over a full 2-hour stretch and the estimate rises to 1.5 x 80 x 2 = 240 kcal — the small movements the Compendium tracks under "fidgeting" add up to a meaningfully higher NEAT contribution than staying still.

Is standing at a desk actually worth it for weight management?

On its own, modestly. The Compendium measured them as functionally similar: both involve minimal movement, so researchers assigned watching TV while standing the same 1.3 MET as standing quietly rather than the 1.5 MET fidgeting variant. It's listed as its own code mainly because it's a common enough scenario, like standing at a party or a concert, that it's tracked separately as code 07045.
