The elliptical trainer is popular precisely because it's low-impact: your feet never leave the pedals, so there's no landing shock the way there is with running. That doesn't mean it's low-effort — the Compendium of Physical Activities rates moderate elliptical work at 5.0 MET, comparable to a brisk walk or light jog, and vigorous effort at 9.0 MET, on par with a fairly hard run, depending on resistance and stride rate.
Console-displayed calorie counts on gym elliptical machines vary a lot between brands and are often generous estimates tuned to keep users motivated. This calculator instead uses the Compendium's measured MET values for moderate and vigorous elliptical effort, so you're working from an independently measured research figure rather than a manufacturer's in-house formula.
The formula is the same MET-based multiplication used across this site: kcal = MET x body weight in kilograms x duration in hours. Because the elliptical lets you adjust resistance and incline continuously, your actual effort can drift between "moderate" and "vigorous" over a session — if that happens, split your workout into segments at each intensity and total the two results rather than picking one setting for the whole session.

Push the same length session up to vigorous effort for an 85 kg person over 45 minutes instead, and the estimate is 9.0 x 85 x 0.75 = 573.75 kcal — nearly 64% more calories in three-quarters of the time, the calorie cost of trading a comfortable pace for a genuinely hard one.

Why does this differ from the calorie count on the elliptical's console?
Gym elliptical consoles often use manufacturer-specific formulas that factor in resistance level, stride cadence, and sometimes your entered age and sex, and different brands' algorithms can disagree with each other by a wide margin. This calculator instead uses the Compendium of Physical Activities' independently measured MET values for moderate and vigorous elliptical effort, so expect it to land in a similar range to the console but not match it exactly.
How do I know if I'm working at "moderate" or "vigorous" effort?
A rough guide: at moderate effort (5.0 MET) you can hold a conversation in full sentences but you're breathing noticeably harder than at rest. At vigorous effort (9.0 MET) you can only manage short phrases between breaths. If you use a heart rate monitor, moderate effort typically sits around 64-76% of max heart rate and vigorous effort around 77% or higher, though this varies by fitness level.
Is the elliptical really as good as running for calorie burn?
At matched effort levels, they're comparable — vigorous elliptical work (9.0 MET) is close to a moderate-to-hard run in the 8-9 MET range. The elliptical's real advantage isn't a higher calorie burn, it's that you can sustain that intensity with far less joint impact, which is why it's a common choice during running injury recovery or for people managing joint pain.
Does increasing the resistance or incline change which option I should pick?
Yes, indirectly — resistance and incline are inputs to your effort, not outputs this calculator asks for directly. If cranking up the resistance pushes you from a conversational pace to short-phrases-only breathing, that's the signal to switch from moderate to vigorous, regardless of what number the resistance dial shows.
Can I use this for a stair-climber or other cross-trainer machine instead?
Not accurately — different cardio machines have their own Compendium codes because the muscle groups and movement patterns differ enough to change the energy cost.
