How this instrument works
This instrument works out how much each person in a carpool owes toward fuel for a shared trip. It starts by finding the total gallons burned (trip distance divided by the vehicle's mpg), multiplies that by the price per gallon to get the total fuel cost, then divides by the number of riders sharing the ride — driver included, if the driver is also chipping in a share.
Splitting strictly by fuel cost is the most common and most transparent carpool arrangement: everyone pays for the gas actually used on the trip, in proportion to how many people are riding along. It sidesteps arguments over who drives more often, because the cost is recalculated fresh for every trip based on real distance and real fuel prices rather than a flat guessed rate.
Some carpools add a small margin on top of pure fuel cost to cover wear, tires and maintenance on the driver's vehicle — this instrument computes the pure fuel-only split, which you can treat as a floor and adjust upward by agreement if your group wants to compensate the driver for more than gas alone.
- Enter Trip distance in miles — the one-way or round-trip distance the group is actually sharing, whichever your carpool has agreed to split.
- Enter Vehicle fuel economy in mpg for the car actually making the trip; check the driver's dashboard or owner's manual if unsure.
- Enter Fuel price per gallon at the time of the trip — local pump price gives the most accurate split.
- Enter Number of riders sharing the cost, including the driver if the driver is also contributing a share.
- Read Cost per person for what each rider owes; multiply by rider count to confirm it reconstructs the total fuel bill.
Worked example — 100-mile carpool split four ways
Four coworkers carpool 100 miles in a car that gets 25 mpg, with gas at $3.50 a gallon. The trip burns 100 / 25 = 4 gallons, costing 4 x $3.50 = $14.00 in total fuel. Split evenly among the 4 riders, that's $14.00 / 4 = $3.50 per person, exactly what Cost per person reads.
Each rider owes $3.50 for that trip regardless of who drove — if the same group carpools again at a different distance or when gas prices shift, re-running the numbers gives a fresh, fair split every time rather than relying on a flat guessed rate.
Questions
Should the driver also pay a share, or just the passengers?
That is a group decision, not a math one — this calculator simply divides the total fuel cost by however many riders you enter. Many informal carpools have the driver ride free since they are providing the car and doing the driving, in which case you would enter one fewer rider than the total headcount, or the passenger count only. Some groups prefer everyone including the driver to pay an equal share and rotate who drives; either approach works, just be consistent about who you count.
Does this include wear and tear on the car, not just gas?
No — this is a pure fuel-cost split: (distance / mpg) x price per gallon, divided by riders. It does not add anything for tires, oil changes, depreciation or other running costs. Some carpool groups add a flat cushion, like rounding up or adding a fixed amount per trip, to informally compensate the driver for wear beyond fuel; this calculator gives you the fuel-only baseline to build that adjustment on top of.
What if riders join or leave partway through the trip?
Run the calculation separately for each distinct leg of the trip with the correct rider count for that leg, then add each rider's per-leg shares together for their total. For example, if two riders travel the full distance and a third joins for only half of it, compute the full-distance cost split three ways for the shared portion and the remaining distance split two ways, then sum accordingly.
How accurate is my car's mpg figure likely to be?
The EPA-window-sticker mpg rating is a reasonable estimate, but real-world mileage varies with driving style, terrain, traffic, air conditioning use and vehicle load — a carpool full of passengers and luggage will typically get slightly worse mileage than the rated figure. For a rough split among friends, the rated mpg is usually close enough; for a group that tracks costs carefully, using the car's actual average mpg from recent fill-ups will be more accurate.
Why not just split the total trip cost evenly by headcount without doing the mpg math?
You certainly can agree a flat per-person rate, but computing it from actual distance, mpg and fuel price keeps the split honest as those variables change — a 200-mile trip should cost more per person than a 50-mile trip in the same car, and a fill-up at $4.50/gallon should cost more than one at $3.20/gallon. Recalculating each time avoids both overcharging and undercharging riders as conditions shift.
