This instrument estimates the total dollar cost of fuel for any planned drive by multiplying three things together: your vehicle's fuel consumption rate (gallons burned per mile), the price per gallon, and the distance of the trip. It is the direct, everyday-budgeting counterpart to efficiency figures like mpg — instead of telling you how efficient your car is, it tells you what a specific drive will actually cost in dollars.

Worked example — a 200-mile trip at 0.033333 gal/mi

A vehicle consumes fuel at a rate of 0.033333 gal/mi (equivalent to about 30 mpg), fuel costs $3.50 a gallon, and the planned trip covers 200 miles. Entering those three figures gives cost = 0.033333 x 3.50 x 200 = $23.33.

That $23.33 is the gas budget for this specific 200-mile trip at today's fuel price — recalculating with a different distance, say for a shorter errand run or a longer weekend trip, gives a fresh cost estimate for each without needing to re-derive the vehicle's consumption rate each time.

I only know my mpg, not gal/mi — how do I convert?

Fuel consumption in gallons per mile is the exact mathematical reciprocal of mpg — divide 1 by your mpg figure. For example, a car rated at 30 mpg has a fuel consumption of 1 / 30 = 0.033333 gal/mi, which is the number to enter here. How is this different from AAA's 'Your Driving Costs' fuel estimate?

AAA's annual study estimates the fuel component of vehicle ownership using national average assumptions about mileage, gas prices and typical annual driving distance, as one piece of a larger total-cost-of-ownership figure that also includes maintenance, insurance and depreciation. This instrument uses the identical underlying relationship — fuel used times price per gallon — but with your own real vehicle's consumption rate, your local fuel price and a trip distance you specify, giving a more precise estimate for that specific drive.

Should I use the current local pump price or a national average?

Use whatever price you actually expect to pay for the fuel this trip will use — typically your local pump price if you're filling up nearby, or a reasonable estimate for prices along the route if you expect to fuel up elsewhere, such as on a longer road trip. Fuel prices can vary noticeably by region and even by station, so a local, current price will give a more accurate cost estimate than a national average figure.

Can I use this to estimate the fuel cost of my daily commute?

Yes — enter your vehicle's fuel consumption rate, your local fuel price, and your round-trip commute distance (double your one-way distance) to get a per-day fuel cost, then multiply by your typical number of commuting days in a week or month to project a weekly or monthly gas budget for getting to and from work.

Does this account for traffic, idling or driving style?

Not directly — it assumes the fuel-consumption rate you enter already reflects your typical driving conditions, since that rate itself is where traffic, idling, acceleration habits, and route terrain would already show up as a higher or lower gal/mi figure. If you calculate your consumption rate from a real fill-up that included your normal mix of driving, the resulting cost estimate will already reflect that driving style without needing any separate adjustment.
