How this instrument works

Fuel distance, or range, is simply how far a given amount of fuel can carry a vehicle at its typical fuel economy — the available gallons multiplied by miles-per-gallon. Enter the gallons currently in the tank (or a planned fill amount) and your vehicle's mpg, and the instrument returns the maximum distance that fuel should cover.

This is a maximum-range estimate, not a 'safe to drive exactly this far' figure — it assumes your mpg holds steady for the whole distance, which real driving rarely does perfectly. Highway cruising, hills, cargo weight, weather and traffic all shift real mpg up or down from an average figure, so the honest way to use a range estimate is as an upper bound, not a target to run right up against.

Range estimates matter most exactly when they're least convenient to get wrong: planning a fuel stop on a remote stretch of road, deciding whether to top off before a long drive, or figuring out if a nearly-empty tank will make it to the next town. Building in a reasonable buffer below the calculated maximum — rather than treating it as an exact number — is standard practice for any range estimate, fuel or otherwise.

Worked example — a 15-gallon tank at 28 mpg

A mid-size sedan has a 15-gallon tank and a real-world fuel economy of about 28 mpg. Entering 15 for fuel available and 28 for fuel economy gives distance = 15 x 28 = 420 miles as the maximum range on a full tank.

That 420-mile figure is a ceiling, not a target — a driver planning a 380-mile trip on this vehicle would have roughly 40 miles of theoretical buffer, but would still be wise to fuel up along the way if the mpg assumption is optimistic for the actual route, such as one involving hills, heavy traffic, or highway speeds above the car's most efficient range.

Questions

Should I use my tank's full capacity or my current fuel level?

It depends on what you're planning. Use full tank capacity to estimate the maximum range of a completely full tank — useful when deciding whether a long trip needs a mid-route fuel stop at all. Use your current, partial fuel level (read from the gauge, or estimated from what fraction of a full tank remains) to estimate how much farther you can go right now before you need to refuel, which is the more urgent question on a low-fuel warning.

Why is this range estimate described as a maximum rather than a guarantee?

The calculation assumes your fuel economy holds steady across the whole distance, but real mpg shifts with driving style, terrain, weather, cargo weight, tire pressure and traffic — a hilly or high-speed highway stretch typically returns worse mpg than a flat, moderate-speed one. Treating the result as an upper bound and leaving a reasonable buffer, rather than planning to drive exactly to the calculated limit, is the safer way to use any range estimate.

Should I use the EPA sticker mpg or my own real-world average?

Your own real-world average, tracked from recent fill-ups, is more trustworthy for range planning because it already reflects how you actually drive that specific vehicle, rather than a standardized lab test. If you don't have a real-world figure yet, the EPA combined rating is a reasonable starting estimate, but it's worth padding your planned buffer a bit more when relying on the sticker number, especially for a drive with limited fuel-stop options.

How much buffer should I leave below the calculated maximum range?

There's no single universal number, but a common rule of thumb is to plan to refuel with at least a quarter tank or roughly 50–75 miles of estimated range still remaining, more if the route has long stretches without fuel stations. The right buffer depends on how remote the route is, how confident you are in your mpg estimate, and how much risk you're comfortable with if conditions turn out worse than expected.

Does this calculator account for a fuel gauge's reserve or 'empty' margin?

No — it works purely from the gallons figure you enter and your mpg, so if you enter your gauge's indicated remaining fuel, the result already reflects whatever that reading represents. Many vehicles keep a small reserve of fuel even after the gauge reads empty or the low-fuel light comes on, but that reserve is not something this calculator accounts for automatically; treat the low-fuel warning as the real limit to plan around, not the calculated range figure.
