Chocolate toxicity comes from methylxanthines — mainly theobromine, plus some caffeine — which cats, like dogs, metabolize slowly. This tool uses the same formula and chocolate-type figures as the dog chocolate calculator on this site: multiply the amount eaten by a per-gram theobromine+caffeine figure for the type selected, then divide by your cat's body weight, for an estimated dose in mg per kg.

Read this carefully: the mild/moderate/severe/LD50 reference bands cited below come from dog-specific toxicology data (Merck's Veterinary Manual, figures widely cited by ASPCA Animal Poison Control) — there is no independently established set of feline-specific thresholds. Cats are generally considered more sensitive to chocolate toxicity than dogs, not less, so treat the canine-derived bands below as a conservative floor for a cat, not a precise feline threshold, and lean toward caution at any estimated dose.

Worked example — three chocolate scenarios

A 4.5 kg cat eats 15 g of milk chocolate (2.3 mg/g): (2.3 × 15) ÷ 4.5 ≈ 7.67 mg/kg.
