How this instrument works

Chocolate toxicity in dogs comes from methylxanthines — mainly theobromine, plus some caffeine — compounds dogs metabolize far more slowly than people do. Different chocolate types contain very different amounts: baking or unsweetened chocolate has the most per gram, dark chocolate a middling amount, and milk chocolate the least (white chocolate has negligible amounts). This tool multiplies the amount eaten by a per-gram figure for the chocolate type you select, then divides by your dog's body weight, to estimate a combined theobromine + caffeine dose in mg per kg.

Per Merck's Veterinary Manual and figures widely cited by ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center, clinical signs in dogs are reported in roughly these bands: mild signs (vomiting, diarrhea, restlessness, increased thirst) starting around 20 mg/kg; cardiotoxic effects (abnormal heart rhythm) around 40–50 mg/kg; seizures at doses of 60 mg/kg or more; and a reported oral LD50 — the dose lethal to half of dogs in studies — of roughly 100–200 mg/kg. These are reference bands from population data, not a guarantee about any individual dog; severe signs and death have been reported at lower doses too, since individual sensitivity varies.

Worked example — three chocolate scenarios

A 10 kg dog eats 50 g of milk chocolate (2.3 mg/g): (2.3 × 50) ÷ 10 = 11.5 mg/kg — below the roughly 20 mg/kg mild-signs threshold, though still worth a call given individual variation.

The same 10 kg dog instead eats 30 g of baking chocolate (15.5 mg/g): (15.5 × 30) ÷ 10 = 46.5 mg/kg — squarely inside the 40–50 mg/kg band where cardiotoxic effects are reported. This is an urgent call to your vet or poison control, not a wait-and-see situation.

A larger 20 kg dog eats 100 g of dark chocolate (5.45 mg/g): (5.45 × 100) ÷ 20 = 27.25 mg/kg — above the mild-signs threshold but below the moderate band, illustrating how both the amount eaten and the dog's size shift the same weight of chocolate between reference bands.

Why do baking and dark chocolate matter so much more than milk chocolate?

Because they contain far more theobromine and caffeine per gram — roughly 15.5 mg/g for baking chocolate versus about 2.3 mg/g for milk chocolate, per Merck's Veterinary Manual. A small amount of baking chocolate can pose a bigger risk than a much larger amount of milk chocolate, which is why this tool asks for the type, not just the weight eaten.

Is a low mg/kg result a guarantee my dog will be fine?

No — treat any elevated result seriously, and even a low estimated dose doesn't rule out an upset stomach or, rarely, unusual individual sensitivity. This tool provides a reference range, not a diagnosis.
