How this instrument works

Onions — along with garlic, leeks, and chives, all members of the Allium genus — contain compounds that can damage a dog's red blood cells, leading to Heinz body hemolytic anemia. Unlike chocolate toxicity, where symptoms can appear within hours, onion toxicity often takes several days to show clinical signs: weakness, pale or yellowish gums, lethargy, and collapse as the anemia develops, well after the onion itself has been eaten and digested.

Worked example — three onion scenarios
