How this instrument works

The metre began as geodesy. France defined it in 1791 as one ten-millionth of a quarter meridian running from pole to equator through Paris, then sent Delambre and Méchain to survey an arc from Dunkirk to Barcelona and pin that length down. Later definitions abandoned our planet altogether: a platinum-iridium bar in 1889, then krypton-86 wavelengths in 1960, and since 1983 the fixed speed of light, making the metre exactly how far light travels in vacuum during one 299,792,458th of a second.

The centimetre carries no separate definition at all. Prefix centi- was among ten adopted in France's law of 18 germinal an III (1795), and it fixes the multiplier 10⁻², so 1 cm is 0.01 m by construction rather than by measurement. That relationship survived every redefinition above, and survived 2019, when SI rebuilt kilogram, ampere, kelvin and mole around fixed constants of nature. Prefixes went untouched. For eight decades the centimetre outranked its parent: CGS, standardised from 1874, treated centimetre-gram-second as base, and physicists wrote in ergs and dynes until MKS units displaced them.

Usage splits by scale and by habit. Tailors, nurses and passport forms work in centimetres — sleeve length, wound size, a stated height of 180 cm — while builders, swimmers and drapers work in metres: a 50 m pool, a football pitch about 105 m long, curtain fabric cut off a roll by metre. Architects dodge both, dimensioning drawings in millimetres so plans read 2500 rather than 2.5 m and no decimal point can go missing on site.

Worked example — a curtain drop of 250 cm

You hold a tape against a bay window and read 250 cm from rail to floor. Fabric hangs on a roll priced by metre, so type 250 into Centimetres (cm) and Metres (m) returns 2.5. Two places left, nothing rounded away: 250 becomes 25.0 becomes 2.5.

That 2.5 m is your finished drop, though, not an order quantity. Add hem and heading allowance — 20 cm at bottom, 10 cm at top is typical — giving 280 cm, or 2.8 m, which most shops will cut to a round 3 m. Order in metres, measure in centimetres, and keep both numbers on your note so any mis-shifted decimal shows itself immediately.

Questions

Is 1 cm exactly 0.01 m?

Yes, exactly — by definition of the prefix rather than by any measurement. Centi- denotes the factor 10⁻² and always has, so nothing uncertain attaches to it and no future redefinition of the metre can alter it. Even 2019's overhaul of SI, which rebuilt four base units around fixed constants of nature, left prefixes alone. Rounding enters only where displays truncate decimals.

How do I convert centimetres to metres in my head?

Move the decimal point two places left. 250 cm reads 2.5 m; 7 cm reads 0.07 m; 1842 cm reads 18.42 m. Where your figure shows no decimal point, imagine one at its right-hand end and count from there. A frequent slip is shifting right instead, turning 250 cm into 25000 rather than 2.5 — ten thousand times out, and obvious once you picture the wall.

Does 1 m² equal 100 cm²?

No — it equals 10000 cm², and 1 m³ equals 1000000 cm³. That length factor of 0.01 squares to 0.0001 and cubes to 0.000001, so areas and volumes need it squared or cubed. Anyone ordering floor tiles, wallpaper or topsoil hits this error more often than any other. This sheet handles lengths only; for area, divide square centimetres by 10000 instead.

Should a drawing say 2.5 m or 250 cm?

Neither, under normal architectural practice: construction drawings across Britain, Germany, Australia and much of Europe are dimensioned in millimetres, so that height reads 2500. Holding one unit across a whole sheet removes any chance that one lost decimal point or a missing symbol turns 2.5 into 25. Reserve centimetres for tailoring, medicine and casual description, metres for spans and areas, millimetres for anything a joiner will cut.

Is a centimetre identical in Britain and America?

Yes. Unlike the foot, which needed a 1959 treaty to reconcile British and American versions, the centimetre has carried one definition worldwide since 1795. US customary lengths are themselves defined against the metre — an inch is exactly 2.54 cm — so an American ruler's inch edge and its centimetre edge are both metric underneath. Imperial versus US customary simply does not arise here.

Why do people skip decimetres?

Because almost nobody finds a use for them. The decimetre (10 cm) is perfectly legal SI and turns up in school exercises, yet everyday practice jumps straight from centimetres to metres, exactly as it skips hectometres. Prefixes in general circulation cluster three orders apart — milli, kilo, mega — and centi- survives as an exception mostly because one hundredth of a metre suits the human hand and a jacket sleeve.
