How this instrument works

The metre is SI's base unit of length, and its definition has been rebuilt repeatedly: one ten-millionth of a quarter meridian through Paris (1791), then the platinum mètre des Archives (1799), an international platinum-iridium prototype (1889), 1 650 763.73 wavelengths of krypton-86 orange light (1960), and since 1983 whatever distance light covers in vacuum during 1/299 792 458 of one second. The decimetre needed no separate revision at any stage, being no rival standard but simply one tenth of whichever metre was current.

That tenth comes from deci-, Latin in origin and French by birth: the law of 18 germinal an III — spring 1795 — handed submultiples Latin names such as déci, centi and milli, while multiples took Greek ones like déca, hecto and kilo. Deci- survives as one of only four prefixes that break SI's later habit of stepping in thousand-fold jumps. Its value, 10⁻¹, is notation rather than observation, so 0.1 carries no uncertainty whatsoever, and moving between these two units is bookkeeping, not measurement.

Everyday use splits sharply by country. Swedes and Norwegians say decimeter without thinking twice, for anything between hand-sized and arm-length; Chinese and Russian primary classrooms drill 分米 and дециметр as ordinary rungs on ladders of ten. British and American metric practice, by contrast, skips from centimetres straight to metres. Two niches keep dm alive regardless: one cubic decimetre is exactly one litre, which is why litre cartons hold precisely as much milk as 1 dm cubes would, and radio engineers still call UHF — 300 MHz to 3 GHz, wavelengths running from 10 dm down to 1 dm — decimetric waves.

Worked example — 25 dm on a joiner's cut list

A Nordic workshop sends over its cut list quoting run lengths in whole decimetres, 25 for the kitchen worktop — habit that survives because timber merchants there list board lengths that way too. Type 25 into Decimetres (dm) and Metres (m) returns 2.5. Digits unchanged; only the decimal point has travelled.

Nothing here is approximated: 25 × 0.1 = 2.5 on any calculator ever built, and writing that run as 250 cm or 2500 mm agrees digit for digit. What deserves your second glance is which symbol was written down — 25 dam would mean decametres, hence 250 m, worktop enough to outrun two football pitches.

Questions

Is the 0.1 factor exact, or has it been rounded?

Exact, and not by measurement. SI prefixes are definitions: deci- means 10⁻¹ and has meant that since France's 1795 nomenclature law, so 1 dm is one tenth of the metre with zero uncertainty attached. Later redefinitions of the metre itself — krypton-86 light in 1960, speed of light in 1983 — never disturbed this relationship, because both units shift together. Whatever precision you type survives intact.

What is the difference between dm and dam?

A factor of one hundred, which makes this pair of symbols worth reading twice. Lowercase dm is one decimetre, 0.1 m; dam is one decametre, 10 m. Confusing them is far and away the commonest slip on this conversion, helped along by obsolete notation — decametre was once written Dm or dkm, both long abolished. SI recognises dam alone. If the drawing looks wrong by two orders of magnitude, suspect that symbol first.

Who actually measures things in decimetres?

Scandinavians, mostly, plus schoolchildren almost everywhere metric. Swedish and Norwegian speakers use decimeter in ordinary conversation where an English speaker would reach for centimetres or fractions of a metre. Elsewhere it survives through two back doors: the litre is defined as one cubic decimetre, and UHF radio has been known as decimetric waves since its wavelengths sit between 1 dm and 10 dm. Formal SI style also nudges writers towards prefixes in steps of one thousand, which quietly crowds dm out of technical prose.

Is a cubic decimetre exactly one litre?

Yes, since 1964, when the 12th CGPM made litre the special name for one cubic decimetre. From 1901 until that date the litre had instead been volume occupied by 1 kg of pure water at maximum density, which measurement later put at 1.000028 dm³ — a 28-parts-per-million gap that quietly corrupted precise volumetric work of that era. Today's definition is exact by decision, so 1 L cartons and 1 dm cubes hold identical space.

Can dividing by ten lose precision on a computer?

Slightly, and it is worth knowing why. Binary floating point cannot store 0.1 exactly, so products like 3 × 0.1 land on 0.30000000000000004 rather than 0.3. Your 25 dm gives a clean 2.5 because 2.5 is representable in binary; other entries may carry an artefact roughly sixteen digits down, far beneath six displayed decimals. Working by hand, shift the decimal point instead of dividing and no artefact can appear at all.

How many inches is a decimetre?

3.937007874… inches, or exactly 500⁄127. That fraction dates from 1959, when six standards bodies fixed the international inch at 25.4 mm precisely, so again no measurement enters. Imperial and US customary inches have been identical ever since; only the US survey foot, retired at the end of 2022, differed, and by two parts per million on foot-based figures alone. Metric-side units such as dm were never affected either way.
