How this instrument works

Kilo- was one of the original prefixes France's National Convention adopted in 1795 when it built the metric system, chosen from the Greek khilioi specifically to mean 'a thousand of' whatever unit followed it. Alongside deci-, centi- and milli-, it gave the new system a way to scale a single base unit up or down by round decimal steps instead of inventing a new name — foot, fathom, furlong, league — for every different length. That decision, formalised again when the General Conference on Weights and Measures adopted the SI in 1960, is the entire reason this conversion never needs rounding.

The metre underneath that prefix has changed its own definition four times — a ten-millionth of the meridian quadrant through Paris in 1791, a platinum-iridium rod in 1889, a count of krypton-86 light waves in 1960, and finally the distance light travels in 1 ⁄ 299,792,458 of a second since 1983. None of those redefinitions touched the kilometre-to-metre ratio itself, because the prefix's job was never to describe the metre's own length, only to multiply it. Whatever a metre turns out to be, a kilometre is still exactly a thousand of them.

That certainty shows up constantly in sport and geography. An outdoor running track measures 400 m, so five laps make 2 km and twenty-five laps make 10 km without any awkward remainder. Mount Everest's officially remeasured height, announced jointly by China and Nepal in December 2020, stands at 8,848.86 m — usually rounded and reported as 8.849 km. A marathon's fixed distance, 42.195 km, is simply 42,195 m when a course official needs to place mile or kilometre markers along the route.

Worked example — a 2 km loop, five laps of a track

Why is a kilometre exactly 1,000 metres and not approximately?

Because 'kilo-' is a defined SI prefix meaning exactly one thousand, not a measured quantity with any tolerance attached. Unlike conversions between separate historical systems — miles and kilometres, say — a kilometre is built directly from the metre by multiplying, so the relationship carries zero uncertainty by construction.
