How this instrument works

It was a deliberately clean, decimal multiple — no history of feet, paces or barleycorns attached, just the metre scaled up by a round power of ten. That simplicity is why kilometres dominate road signage and mapping almost everywhere outside a handful of countries.

The mile's name tells a similar-sounding but far older story. Roman legions marked distance in mille passus, 'a thousand paces,' with each passus equal to two Roman strides of about 0.74 m — five Roman feet — giving a Roman mile of roughly 1,480 m along their road network. England later abandoned that figure: an Act of Parliament under Elizabeth I in 1593 fixed the English statute mile at 5,280 feet, or 1,760 yards, a number with no tidy relationship to Rome's original 'thousand paces' at all.

What finally pinned the mile to a precise metric equivalent was the international yard and pound agreement of 1 July 1959, when the United States, the United Kingdom and four other countries agreed that one yard would equal exactly 0.9144 m.
