How this instrument works
Diameter in centimeters to millimeters is trivial arithmetic (multiply by 10), but that's rarely the number you actually need. Most people measure a ring at home with a metric ruler or a caliper because that's the tool on hand, then need it translated into a size a US or Canadian jeweler will recognize on a spec sheet or a sizing mandrel — which is where the unit conversion and the size lookup both have to happen in the same step.
This calculator does both. It converts the diameter to millimeters, derives the inside circumference as diameter × π (the length a strip of paper wrapped exactly around the inside of the ring would measure), and then estimates the equivalent US/Canada size from that circumference using a linear step of 2.55 mm per whole size.
That step size comes from the same jewelers' trade convention this site's Ring Size Calculator page uses in the other direction (US size → mm), anchored so a size 7 lands at roughly 54.4 mm of inside circumference. The two calculators were derived independently — one from a diameter anchor, one from a circumference step — and they agree closely (within a few hundredths of a millimeter at any given size) rather than being byte-for-byte identical, which is expected: there's no single ISO or ANSI body governing US ring sizing, only decades of converged jewelry-industry practice.

Worked example — sizing a 1.75 cm ring at home
A ring measured with a metric ruler comes out to 1.75 cm across the inside opening. In millimeters that's 17.5 mm (1.75 × 10). Circumference follows as diameter × π: 17.5 × 3.14159265 = 54.9779 mm.
Plugging that circumference into the size formula: (54.9779 − 36.5) ÷ 2.55 = 7.246. That lands just past US size 7 — in practice, a size 7 or a snug size 7.25 would be the order to place, since jewelers stock rings in quarter-size steps rather than to two decimal places.
Questions
Is inside diameter the same as the ring's overall width?
No — inside diameter is the width of the opening a finger passes through, measured across the inner edge of the band, not the thickness or width of the metal itself. A chunky statement ring and a thin band can share the exact same inside diameter and therefore the same size, even though they look very different sitting on the finger.
Why did my calculated US size come out as a decimal like 7.25?
The underlying formula is continuous, but jewelers manufacture and stock rings in fixed steps — usually whole or quarter sizes. A result of 7.246 simply means your measured diameter sits about a quarter of the way between a US 7 and a US 7.25; round to whichever your jeweler actually carries, leaning up rather than down if you're between two stocked sizes.
Is this US ring-size formula an official standard?
No — like the rest of US ring sizing, it's a jewelers' trade convention refined through shared industry practice rather than a document from ISO or ANSI. The genuinely standards-body-governed system is ISO 8653, used across much of continental Europe, which defines ring size directly as inside circumference in millimeters rather than converting through a numbered US-style scale.
How accurate is measuring a ring's diameter with a household ruler?
Less accurate than you'd want for a final purchase — a ±0.5 mm reading error, easy to make eyeballing a ruler against a curved edge, shifts the calculated size by roughly a quarter to a half size. That's fine for a rough estimate or gift-shopping ballpark, but for a ring you're actually buying, a jeweler's metal ring sizer or sizing mandrel will give a far more reliable number.
