How this instrument works

A ring's true size is its inner diameter, the width of the opening a finger has to pass through; the numbered US sizing system (5, 6, 7, and so on, in quarter-size steps) is just a label attached to that measurement, anchored to a reference point of 15.7 mm diameter at size 5, with each full size step adding 0.8 mm. This calculator runs that convention backward from the usual direction: instead of starting from a size and looking up its diameter, it starts from a diameter you've measured and solves for the size that matches.

This is the mirror image of this site's own Ring Size Calculator, which converts a US size into a millimeter diameter — the two tools use the identical anchor point and step size, just solved for different unknowns, so a diameter you look up here and a size you look up there will always round-trip back to each other exactly.

The US sizing convention is a trade convention shared across the jewelry industry rather than a document published by ISO or ANSI, so different jewelers' charts can differ by a few hundredths of a millimeter at a given size — small enough that it rarely changes which size actually fits, but worth knowing if this calculator's output doesn't match a specific retailer's printed chart to the exact hundredth.

  • Measure at normal body temperature if you're converting a live finger measurement rather than an existing ring — fingers swell with heat and shrink in cold, which can shift the reading by a size or more.

Worked example — a customer's ring measures 17.3 mm across

A jeweler slides a customer's ring onto a mandrel and reads 17.3 mm as the inner diameter. US size = 5 + (17.3 − 15.7) ÷ 0.8 = 5 + 1.6 ÷ 0.8 = 5 + 2 = 7 exactly — a clean, no-rounding US size 7.

The inner circumference works out to 17.3 × π ≈ 54.35 mm, which is the number that would show up if the customer instead measured at home by wrapping a strip of paper around the inside of the ring and marking where it overlaps — the same ring, described by two different but consistent measurements.

Questions

How is this different from the site's regular Ring Size Calculator?

The regular calculator starts from a US size and gives you the millimeter diameter; this one runs the same convention in reverse, starting from a diameter you've already measured and solving for the matching US size. Both use the identical anchor (15.7 mm = size 5, +0.8 mm per full size), so results from the two tools always agree with each other.

What if my measured diameter gives a size that isn't a whole or quarter number, like 11.125?

That means your measurement fell between the sizes a jeweler typically stocks in whole or quarter steps. Round to the nearest quarter size the jeweler offers, or ask about half sizes if precision matters — a few hundredths of a millimeter of diameter rarely makes a noticeable difference in fit.

Should I measure diameter or circumference to get the most accurate size?

Diameter, if you can get it directly — measuring straight across an existing ring's opening with calipers is usually more accurate than wrapping a string around the inside and then unwrapping it to measure length, which can stretch or shift. If circumference is all you have, this calculator's own circumference output for a given diameter lets you cross-check the two.

Does this work for European ring sizes too?

Not directly — European sizing under ISO 8653 labels a ring by its inner circumference in millimeters, not a US-style numbered size. If you have a European size, divide it by π to get the diameter in mm first, then enter that diameter here to get the equivalent US size.

Why might my measured diameter not exactly match a size on a jeweler's printed chart?

There's no single governing standards body behind US ring sizing, so different manufacturers' reference tables agree closely but not to the hundredth of a millimeter — a listed size 7 diameter might read anywhere from about 17.3 to 17.4 mm depending on the source. A small mismeasurement (calipers held at a slight angle, for instance) can also shift the reading by a similar amount.
