How this instrument works

A ring's true 'size' is its inner diameter — the width of the opening a finger has to fit through — and every sizing system in the world is really just a different way of labeling that same underlying millimeter measurement. The US system most jewelers in North America use labels sizes with plain numbers (5, 6, 7, and so on, in quarter-size steps), anchored to a reference table: size 5 corresponds to a 15.7 mm inner diameter, and each full size step up adds 0.8 mm of diameter.

This is a trade convention passed down through the jewelry industry, not a formal standard from ISO or ANSI — disclosed plainly, because it's easy to assume any numbered sizing system has a standards body behind it when in practice, jewelers largely converged on this table through decades of shared manufacturing practice rather than a written specification. Small variances of a few hundredths of a millimeter show up between different jewelers' published tables for this reason, though they agree closely enough that a size 7 from one jeweler will fit essentially the same as a size 7 from another.

Worked example — sizing a US 7 engagement ring

A jeweler measures a customer's finger at US size 7, two full sizes above the size-5 anchor. Inner diameter = 15.7 + (7 − 5) × 0.8 = 15.7 + 1.6 = 17.3 mm. That figure is what the jeweler pulls stock ring mandrels or sizing sticks against.

Inner circumference follows as diameter × pi: 17.3 × 3.14159265... = 54.35 mm. If the customer instead measured their own finger at home by wrapping a strip of paper around it and marking the overlap, they'd be looking for that same 54.35 mm mark — the two numbers describe the identical ring opening from different angles, one across, one around.

Questions

Is US ring sizing based on an ISO or ANSI standard?

No — it's a jewelers' trade convention developed and shared across the US jewelry industry rather than a document published by a standards body. The true internationally standardized system is ISO 8653, used across much of continental Europe, which defines a ring's size directly as its inner circumference in millimeters (so a European 'size 54' ring simply has a 54 mm inner circumference) — a genuinely different numbering convention from the US gauge system this calculator uses.

Why do different ring size charts give slightly different mm figures for the same US size?

Because there's no single governing standards body, different jewelers and manufacturers have each published their own reference tables over the decades, and these agree closely but not to the hundredth of a millimeter — you'll see a US size 7 diameter listed anywhere from about 17.3 mm to 17.4 mm depending on the source. The difference is small enough that it rarely affects fit in practice, but it explains why this calculator's output might not match a specific retailer's chart to the last decimal.

How do I convert a European ring size to US size?

European sizes under ISO 8653 are the inner circumference in millimeters directly, so divide that circumference by pi to get inner diameter in mm, then use this calculator's diameter output in reverse: subtract 15.7 from the diameter, divide by 0.8, and add 5 to get the equivalent US size. A 54 mm European size, for instance, is a 17.19 mm diameter — very close to a US size 7.

Does finger size change during the day or with temperature?

Yes — fingers can swell noticeably with heat, humidity, physical activity, and even salty food, and shrink in cold weather. Jewelers typically recommend sizing at normal room temperature, later in the day rather than first thing in the morning, and avoiding sizing right after exercise or a hot shower, since a ring fitted during a temporary swell may feel loose once your finger returns to its usual size.

What if my ring size falls between two quarter sizes on this calculator?

Round to the nearest quarter size the calculator supports, or split the difference and order a half size if your jeweler offers one — a few hundredths of a millimeter of diameter rarely makes a noticeable fit difference.
