How this instrument works

Cost per minute is a plain unit rate: whatever a session cost, divided by however many minutes it lasted. Enter the total dollar charge for a rental, parking session or any other time-billed service, along with the total minutes that charge covers, and the instrument returns dollars per minute.

Time-based billing is everywhere in short-term rentals precisely because it charges people for exactly what they use: a car-share trip, a scooter ride, or a parking session all commonly bill by the minute rather than a flat daily rate, so a 12-minute scooter ride costs a fraction of a 45-minute one. Working out the effective cost per minute from an actual charge lets you compare pricing plans, sanity-check a bill, or estimate the cost of a longer or shorter session before you commit to one.

Worked example — a $20 charge for a 45-minute session

A car-share app charges $20.00 for a 45-minute rental session. Entering 20 for total cost and 45 for total minutes gives cost per minute = 20 / 45 = $0.444444, which rounds to about $0.44 per minute.

That effective rate lets you compare this trip against a different pricing plan — a flat $15 all-day rate would only be cheaper here if the session were expected to run well beyond roughly 34 minutes (15 / 0.444444), since below that length the per-minute plan actually costs less.

How is cost per minute different from cost per mile?

Both are simple unit rates, but they divide a total cost by a different quantity — minutes for time-based billing versus miles for distance-based billing. Cost per minute suits services where the meter runs on elapsed time regardless of distance covered, like car-share, scooter rentals or metered parking. Cost per mile suits distance-driven expenses like fuel. Why do car-share and scooter services bill by the minute?

Per-minute billing charges customers for exactly the time they occupy the vehicle, which fits short, variable-length trips far better than a flat hourly or daily rate would. A 10-minute scooter hop and a 40-minute one have very different value to the rider, and per-minute pricing reflects that directly, letting a rider pay roughly in proportion to how long they actually used the vehicle rather than rounding up to a full billing block.

How do I compare a per-minute rate against a flat daily or hourly rate?

Compute the per-minute rate from the plan you're checking, then multiply it by your typical session length in minutes to get an equivalent per-trip cost, and compare that directly against the flat rate. If your typical trip is short, a per-minute plan is usually cheaper; once your typical trip length grows past the point where the per-minute total would exceed the flat rate, the flat-rate plan becomes the better deal.

Does this work for hourly billing too, or only per-minute?

The same ratio works for any time unit — just make sure the 'minutes' figure you enter is actually in minutes if you want a per-minute rate. If you have an hourly charge instead, you can convert hours to minutes first (multiply hours by 60) before entering it, or simply divide total cost by total hours separately to get a cost-per-hour rate using the same basic total-cost-divided-by-time approach.

Why might my actual bill not match cost-per-minute times my ride time exactly?

Many time-based services add a flat unlock or base fee on top of the per-minute charge, round up partial minutes to the next full minute, or apply a minimum charge for very short trips — all of which mean the effective blended rate you compute here (total cost / total minutes) can differ from the posted per-minute price alone.
