How this instrument works

A US gallon is defined as exactly 231 cubic inches. That odd-looking figure was inherited rather than chosen: it is the English wine gallon fixed by statute in 1707, which America kept after independence while Britain scrapped it in 1824 for an imperial gallon based on ten pounds of water. Since an inch has been exactly 25.4 mm since 1959, a US gallon amounts to exactly 3.785411784 litres.

Splitting that gallon is pure halving. Four quarts to a gallon, two pints to a quart, two cups to a pint: 4 × 2 × 2 = 16 cups, or 128 US fluid ounces at 8 per cup. One cup is therefore 1⁄16 of a gallon, and 1 ÷ 16 = 0.0625 with nothing left over. Written in binary that factor is 2 raised to −4, a value every computer stores perfectly, which is why 16 cups returns 1.000000 gal here and not 0.999999.

Cups earned their standing in American kitchens through Fannie Merritt Farmer, whose 1896 Boston Cooking-School Cook Book swapped vague teacupfuls for level, standardised measures. A US customary cup holds 236.5882365 mL. Gallons stayed on the buying side of the counter — milk jugs, brewing carboys, brine buckets, iced-tea urns, paint. Recipes speak in cups while suppliers price in gallons, and this sheet sits between those two habits.

Worked example — brine for a pickling day

That result is exact, not merely tidy. 16 × 0.0625 = 1 leaves no remainder in decimal or in binary, so the last displayed digit is trustworthy. Scale to 40 cups and you get 2.5 gal, which means buying three jugs and taking one home half full.

How many cups are in a US gallon?

Sixteen, exactly. A US gallon splits into 4 quarts, each quart into 2 pints, each pint into 2 cups — 4 × 2 × 2 = 16. Counted in fluid ounces it comes out identically: 128 US fl oz per gallon divided by 8 fl oz per cup gives 16. Nothing about that chain is approximate, so 0.0625 gal per cup carries no uncertainty whatsoever.

Is 0.0625 exact, or has it been rounded for display?

Exact. It is 1⁄16 written out in full, and one sixteenth happens to terminate after four decimal places. It also terminates in binary — 0.0625 is 2 raised to the power −4 — which means your computer holds it without approximation, unlike factors such as 0.1 or 3.785411784. Results for whole-number cup entries land dead on.

Does this work for UK imperial gallons?

No. An imperial gallon is 4.54609 L, about 20% larger than the US gallon of 3.785411784 L, so 16 US cups equals roughly 0.833 imperial gallons rather than 1. Britain also abandoned cup measures in cookery generations ago, weighing dry goods on scales instead, so an imperial cup is a historical curiosity of 10 imperial fluid ounces and is not what this sheet assumes.

Which cup is this — the customary one or the 240 mL nutrition-label cup?

US customary, at 236.5882365 mL, which is what recipes and measuring jugs mean. Two rivals exist and neither divides a gallon evenly. Nutrition labels in America use a round 240 mL under FDA rules, so 16 of those come to 3.84 L, or 1.0144 gal. Australia, New Zealand and modern Canadian recipes use a 250 mL metric cup: 16 of them make exactly 4 L, or 1.0567 gal.

Can I use this for flour, sugar or berries?

For space, yes — a cup of flour still occupies 1⁄16 of a gallon of volume. Two cautions, though. Dry goods vary wildly by weight depending on whether you scoop or spoon them, so 1 cup of flour ranges from about 120 g to 150 g and a scale beats any converter. Separately, American produce is sometimes sold by the dry gallon, a distinct 268.8025-cubic-inch unit about 16% larger than the liquid one used here.

Why 231 cubic inches for a gallon?

Because a 1707 English statute defined the wine gallon that way, and the young United States never changed it. The figure came from a cylinder 7 inches across and 6 inches deep, whose volume is 230.907 cubic inches, rounded up to a workable 231. Britain replaced that vessel in 1824 with a gallon defined by the weight of water, which is why two gallons of different size are still in circulation today.
