How this instrument works

The US liquid pint descends from the Queen Anne wine gallon of 231 cubic inches, a container standard England fixed in 1707 and later discarded. America kept it. In 1832 the Treasury asked Ferdinand Hassler's Office of Weights and Measures to settle national capacity standards, and that 231-cubic-inch gallon was adopted; divide by eight for the pint, by sixteen for the cup. Once the 1959 international yard and pound agreement made the inch exactly 25.4 mm, both volumes became exact metric quantities: 473.176473 mL to the pint, 236.5882365 mL to the cup.

The factor 0.5 rides above all that arithmetic. Cups and pints sit on the same customary ladder — 8 fluid ounces against 16 — so the ratio survives whatever millilitre value the underlying gallon happens to carry. American shoppers meet the pair constantly without noticing: a pint of heavy cream pours two cupfuls, a school milk carton is a half-pint and therefore one cupful, and a tub of ice cream scoops the same two. The habit of measuring by volume rather than weight is usually traced to Fannie Farmer, whose 1896 Boston Cooking-School Cook Book insisted on level, standardised cupfuls.

Three things trip people up. The FDA's nutrition-labelling cup is 240 mL exactly, picked so serving sizes print tidily, so two of them overshoot a 473.176473 mL pint by nearly 7 mL. The US dry pint used for berries and cherry tomatoes is a separate unit at 550.610471 mL, one sixty-fourth of a bushel. And an imperial pint is 568.26125 mL, roughly a fifth larger — the reason a British drinker finds an American bar glass disappointing.

cup — the volume in US customary cups, 8 US fluid ounces · pt — the same volume in US liquid pints, 16 US fluid ounces. The 0.5 is exact by definition rather than measurement: the pint is constructed as two cups, so nothing is rounded at any precision you ask for.

Worked example — four cups of cream

An ice cream base calls for four cups of heavy cream, and the shop sells cream by the pint. Enter 4 in the US cups (cup) field and the Pints (pt) line returns 2.0 — two cartons, nothing left over, no measuring jug needed at the till.

The tidiness is genuine, not rounded away. Four US customary cups is 4 × 236.5882365 mL = 946.352946 mL, and two liquid pints is 2 × 473.176473 mL = the same 946.352946 mL, digit for digit. Swap in 240 mL labelling cups and four of them reach 960 mL — 13.6 mL past two pints, about a tablespoon of cream nobody budgeted for.

Is 2 cups to a pint exact, or rounded?

Exact. The US liquid pint is defined as 16 US fluid ounces and the customary cup as 8, so the pint is two cups by construction — no measured quantity enters the relationship and there is nothing to round. Both sides land on terminating decimals in metric too: 236.5882365 mL per cup, 473.176473 mL per pint, each traceable to the 231-cubic-inch gallon and the 25.4 mm inch.

Does this hold for imperial pints as well?

The ratio does; the volumes do not. An imperial pint is 568.26125 mL against the US liquid pint's 473.176473 mL, about a fifth larger, which is why a pint of beer means two different things across the Atlantic. If your cup is a pre-metric British one of 10 imperial fluid ounces, two of those still fill an imperial pint and 0.5 applies. Mix the systems — US cups poured into an imperial pint — and you need 2.4 of them, not 2.

Is a measuring cup the same as a nutrition-label cup?

No, and the gap is about 1.4%. A US customary cup is 236.5882365 mL, while the cup the FDA uses on Nutrition Facts panels is a round 240 mL, set that way so serving sizes print cleanly. Most American measuring jugs and dry cups are made to the customary figure. Across a single cup the difference is under a teaspoon; across a batch built on twenty cups it is close to five tablespoons.

What about a dry pint of blueberries?

That is a different unit. The US dry pint is one sixty-fourth of a bushel — 33.6003125 cubic inches, or 550.610471 mL — some 16% larger than the liquid pint. Berries, cherry tomatoes and shellfish are still sold by it in American markets. This sheet handles liquid measure only, so a dry pint works out at 2.33 customary cups rather than 2.

Why is a cup 236.5882365 mL and not a rounder number?

Because the cup was derived, never chosen. The chain runs: gallon = 231 cubic inches exactly, inherited from the Queen Anne wine gallon and confirmed for the United States in 1832; inch = 25.4 mm exactly since the 1959 international yard and pound agreement; therefore gallon = 3.785411784 L, pint = 473.176473 mL, and cup = half of that. Every digit is definitional. Nobody set out to make the cup awkward in metric — it simply was never a metric unit.

How many cups are in a quart or a gallon?

Four cups to the US liquid quart and sixteen to the gallon, since a quart is two pints and a gallon is eight. The whole ladder is doublings: one cup, two cups make a pint, four make a quart, sixteen make a gallon. Enter 16 in the US cups (cup) field and the Pints (pt) line returns 8, a full US gallon.
