How this instrument works

Both units sit on one ladder. The US liquid gallon holds exactly 231 cubic inches, inherited from the English wine gallon that Queen Anne's Parliament fixed by statute in 1707. Halve that gallon three times and you arrive at the pint, 473.176473 mL; halve it once more and you have the cup, 236.5882365 mL. Since each is one binary fraction of the same defined volume, their ratio is exactly 2, and no measured quantity enters anywhere along that chain.

Britain went another way in 1824, retiring its wine gallon for an imperial gallon first pegged to the weight of ten pounds of distilled water and now fixed at 4.54609 litres. An imperial pint, twenty imperial fluid ounces, runs to 568.26125 mL — near enough one fifth larger than its American namesake, or 2.402 US customary cups. Same word, different vessel, which is why doubling that holds exactly on one side of the Atlantic quietly under-measures on the other.

Below the cup sits the gill: one quarter of the pint, half of one cup, surviving now mainly in old bar measures and older cookbooks.
